It deeply saddens me to share with you that Bob has passed on - He is now "In The Spirit!" I'm feeling very grateful that my friend is pain free and resting peacefully. My hope is that Carolyn and her sons have an easy transition...
Rather than start a new thread and lose all of your supportive contributions - I felt it best to keep everything together… as it should be.
I called on Marlene Burns to write a eulogy for our friend Bob, and as expected... she responded with her usual eloquent style and grace:
"I have been overwhelmed by the magnanimous outpouring of support, love and appreciation for our friend and colleague, Bob Salo. Rarely, if ever, has our online community been brought together in such a way, for the sole purpose of honoring a man so deserving of our praise.
It speaks of the man.....the empath who was so taken by the plight of others, that he felt an obligation to bring it to the attention of the rest of the world through the way he knew best..... through his art. If there is any doubt that art can extend beyond an artist's physical time on Earth, it should be put to rest. Bob's messages are gripping, real and powerful."
My appreciation and gratitude to all of you for your diligence in keeping this thread "alive." I too have been overwhelmed by your support and love for Bob. I know many of you will want to share before I close this thread, so I will keep it open until it fades into memory...
Please know - You ARE amazing!

What a Dear Dear Man,...and a Wonderful Friend...He made me feel So Welcomed when I first joined this Family...Serious, when it called for seriousness....Compassionate , way beyond most everyone else....And FUNNY..Really Really Funny, when a good laugh was in order or when he felt that it was a great idea, to hit us with one of his "BOBORISMS" when we least expected it..
Bob, What a Joy to know you.

So very sad to hear about the progression of Bob's illness, as I know that he has fought very hard these past years. Bob's contribution to the people of Haiti and the portrayal of their lives and culture has been enjoyed by many artists here on FAA, and also his contribution in raising awareness to the plight of the Haitian people after the Major earthquake. God bless you and your family Bob and give you the support you need at this time.

Bob Salo is a talented digital painter and very fine man whom I am honoured to be considered a friend of his. He has strong willpower, positive attitude, and a supporting family, especially his wife that have helped him keep this tough fight so far. I knew that it would come. Yet, I still cannot comprehend why many good people like Bob Salo have to leave this world soon.
Peace to Bob Salo and to his family.

I'm very sad to hear this news. I've only known Bob through Fine Arts America yet his work and his overall persona has made an impact on my thoughts . It is hard to establish any kind of a difference between who he is and who he portrays in his art... because it is impossible. Seems to be a faithful man in every respect... with a deep spiritual anchor. I am also sure that this faith will be his greatest triumph in his most trying time.
My prayers go out to both Carolyn and Bob.
Respectfully,
Glenn McCarthy

I never had the pleasure of really knowing, or meeting Bob, but he joined FAA shortly after I did in 2009. I of course admired his exceptional talent and works, just as many others have. It was indeed an honor and privilege when he extended sincere compliments to some of my works. We also exchanged a few emails from time to time.
I was not aware of his recent turn for the worse and I am very saddened to hear this news.
My thoughts and prayers will be for Bob and his loved ones. I know he is on his way to a better place where he will finally be free of his pain and suffering. Bob will be remembered always for his beautiful works and for being a kind, generous man.

Though I never knew him as a friend, I believe it is possible to know someone through their art. Bob is clearly an artist with a talent for putting people at ease and capturing more than just their likeness, he captured their soul and their spirit. His work reflects a love of life, a child's curiosity, and a sense of humor. What a wonderful body of work. The world thanks you, Bob, for sharing your incredible vision. I wish you peace.

Dear Bob and family,
What can I say.....except spend this time together and say all the things you wished you'd said and didn't. I remember having a poetry thread and it got really heated and there were a few personality clashes and I'm certain Bob jumped in and sort of put people in their places in a very deliberate and simple manner and shut the lot of us up! :)) Even in his photo he looks very composed and sure about his work in life and expressed it beautifully in his work.If only we could all see things so clearly and act so socially responsible. Your caring nature has people look to you now and really care that the time you have now is full of love and family and friends. x

Emotion and pure Love. Hugs to him and his family.

I talked to Bob just before Christmas and knew he was having problems again. He and his wife are always on my mind when I log into FAA and I am a great fan and collector of his artworks. Bob and I became friends a few years ago and through the years we have kept in touch from time to time when we both needed to hear or talk to one another. I will miss him dearly as my friend when the time comes. But I do feel honored to know that he considered me his friend.

Oh dear, that is NOT good news. Bob was one of the first I contacted when I was first here on the FAA art site. He gave some good advice which was helpful. He has been a truly talented individual. It is so sad when life takes a wrong turn. Just recently lost the first, graphic design person I worked with when I came to Cleveland OH. Now he made it to 96, kept his studio and was a really a great friend and designer. But the loss is still difficult, no matter the age. Hate to see another loss. So hopefully Bob knows we all care and wish for the best in all respects of the time he has with family and friends.

I think that Marlene has raised very good points.
Artist Bob Salo is a fine person who has a lot of friends on the FAA site. I think that everyone of us like to share our love to him and send directly our emotional support to Bob and his family. Yet, I believe that Bob needs a lot of rest and his family is in need of spending more time with him at this sensitive moment.
On the other hand, I think that Donna has done a favor for us by acting as an unofficial link to Bob and his family in order she could provide any new development about the condition of Bob Salo. I would like to show my thanks to, my appreciation for, my respect to, Donna for taking this difficult task. I am sorry to hear about your recent difficulties in the role of a messenger. Have a restful day, Donna,

Update - Tuesday, Feb 18th
I spoke with Bob at length early yesterday evening. He is a fount of knowledge and wisdom. If I have a question, I always ask for permission to ask, first. He hasn't denied me yet. I'm amazed at not only his willingness to share private/personal information, his wisdom, but the manner in which he does... he gives me a quick answer and sometimes, he tells a story. I am hoping at some point, they will give me permission to share some of my questions and his answers...
Bob's wife and son walked in towards the end of our discussion. I always tell him to go do what's important and be with his family - that we can talk later. Last night he replied by telling me what he was saying is important and he wanted to finish it - I first asked him the question the day before and he answered me with a resounding "Yes!" Then, he wanted to share "why" and as he began, his oldest son walked in. It was important he be with his son in that moment on that day. Yesterday he finished his story :)
We said goodbye and he passed the phone to Carolyn for a few minutes. I asked how Bob is doing - she said he's OK and sleeping a bit more during the day now.
For those of you requesting through PMs or emails if I would share your messages with Bob and Carolyn, please know - they were signed, sealed and forwarded on to Carolyn. For anyone else who wants to get a private message to them, I'd be happy to forward it on also. If you already have my email address send it there and I'll forward. If not, send me a PM with BOB SALO in the title, and write it to them... I will C&P and forward. Don't worry... I don't read them since I respect privacy when it's not meant for me and is private between you and them.

Hi Christine :) Thanks for asking...
We spoke on the phone a while ago... I asked how he is doing/feeling today and he said he's ok, and that he had a good nights rest.
He mentioned something about his "positioning" himself, which I think relates to the fact that he is (and has been) paraplegic. For him to change positions he needs help and he doesn't like to bother the nurses much... ;)
He had a visitor that surprised him. When he was in the hospital a Chaplain stopped in on him sometimes... the same Chaplain came to visit him at Hospice and since it's a long drive across the city, he was surprised and happy to see him.
So, he's feeling OK and has the opportunity to read the forum when Carolyn brings her tablet with her. :)

Hey Donna ... thank you so much for posting this information and for keeping it active. I'm absolutely one of those who doesn't check the discussion boards regularly and I'm just so grateful I found it. Bob Salo is a genius ... a fantastic artist who sees and conveys so much beauty for us all to enjoy. In addition to that, when I joined Fine Art America in 2010, Bob was one of the first to take notice of me. Being a newbie on such a prestigious site where I knew next to no one was pretty intimidating in the early days, but Bob made me feel so welcome. Funny thing ... I was thinking about him a few weeks ago, as I hadn't seen anything of his on the activity page in awhile. So I came looking at his site and had a good, quiet visit with him that day.
I'm deeply saddened to hear this news. Bob ... thank you for your kindness, your friendship and the great gift of your talent. Your images are uplifting, thoughtful and inspiring ... and I'm sure a reflection of your own spirit. You've touched my life ... as I know you have so many others!! Thank you ...

I tried to find a painting from your gallery that would express my appreciation of your work but I couldn’t choose just one. While your paintings express much passion and devotion to the adversities of humanity, they also inspire hope. It takes a person with great vision, talent and especially a good heart to create the works that you have Bob. You will be missed.

Bob's amazing art glows with energy and compassion for the common and the special people alike. He is one of my heroes in the art world, and his work should be seen and appreciated around the world. Eric Clapton's song "Change The World" begins with "If I could reach the stars, I would pull one down for you" expresses my very thoughts toward Bob at this difficult time. Thanks so much, Bob for you kindness toward other artists.

In Bob's own words,..(Just after the devastating earthquake in Haiti)
Don't Let Us Fade Away
"I have had my Haiti gallery posted here months before this disastrous earthquake, I just looked at some of the titles I had given each piece and felt they were no longer applicable due to current conditions in Haiti so I have changed them. I am posting a few Haiti works from my Haiti gallery with hopes that this will inspire some to act on this opportunity to help. The whole world is watching this in horror and this nation was in desperate need of help long before the quake. Maybe with worldwide attention, this small nation can be re-built with the help of all to a level of dignity that embraces every aspect of human rights.... "

Description
this is my great niece of 7 months. She was born the same day I went in for my spinal surgery. I saw her for the first time recently . What a joy to see a little one so eager to learn about life... ...I pray she will hold on to her innocence for as long as she can in these difficult and challenging times...What a delight...something to celebrate !!
I created this piece in her honour and wrote the following poem...........
face full of wonder
before my eyes you grew
you quivered, you jiggled
hands soft like the morning dew
you bounced up and down
with each new revelation
with every unearthing
the world of creation
may you reach on high
where white doves fly
and take what's been given too
the gift of Life, the gift of Truth
let the Way glow bright for you

'For the past few years I have been working on a self taught series of exercises to develop a consistent technique to achieve textural effects using an electronic pen and tablet. My goal is to develop a style as close as possible to traditional painting techniques . I used to paint traditionally but digital has opened up a new and exciting challenge which I love to explore..I have bought my own digital paintings on canvas and have experimented by adding a transparent textural gel to the final piece to add a physical tactile sense to my work...very excitng outcome and challenge to try and paint this way but I love it and don't care much about the negative narrow minded opinions brought out by some regarding the value of digital art. I am enjoying myself in this new form of expression because it now has bridged the gap between all forms of mixed media and creative expressions. As a graphic designer all my life I have had to be innovative to command a steady career so I welcome the technology that is being developed by visionary traditional artists and technical developers to launch us into an exciting future of new tools that are easy to play with but not that easy to master.'

Hello Everyone :)
I just dropped by to let you all know that I've been talking with Bob and Carolyn, regularly. Bob loves when Carolyn brings her tablet so she can show him this thread. :)
Actually, Carolyn said not long ago that she has absolutely no idea how to thank each of you for your kindness to Bob - I hope no one minds, but I told her none of you expect her to take time away from what needs to be done... she still works and when she is not there, she is spending all of her free time at Hospice.
I've assured her that there is no need for her to worry about anything else at this time, in her life. I hope you all agree :)
Thank you all for keeping the thread on the first page. You have their sincere appreciation and love.
With Gratitude,

Windows Of The Soul 13x11 by bob salo |
Windows Of The Soul is about eyes. They reveal so much inner truth. When I first arrived in Haiti in 2006, it was difficult to absorb the total visual and overall impact of the unacceptable living conditions average Haitians endure every day. I felt like I went back 100 years in time. The extreme poverty overwhelmed my senses. It was only after I returned home that I realized how powerful and revealing my video footage and photographs were and how much I admired the Haitian people for their inner and outer beauty and their will to survive. This book features some of the people I came in contact with during my two short visits.
My book is not an historical account of the Hailtian people nor is it about the earthquake and the devastation that followed. It is my personal depiction of the resiliency and strength of the people I met and grew to respect, and from whom I have learned so much.
What my overwhelmed senses at the time could not immediately grasp, the camera captured...the deplorable living conditions and especially the eyes of the children...for the camera never hides the truth.
It is my hope that the artwork in this book conveys my passion for this unfortunate but proud nation, a nation that for the most part remains so removed and out of place with the rest of the world.

Art Feeds The Senses by Bob Salo | A collaboration with Thao Chuong
As an artist it's fascinating to discover how others see your work. Thao Chuong is a deep thinker & often brings forward his inner thoughts and poetic words in a unique style of ancient Japanese poetry called Haiku. My joy is that Thao fed his senses on my artistic expressions and made this collaborative effort a very special, meaningful and intriguing exercise that allowed me to view my own work in a completely different light.

the end is only the beginning 13 x11 by Bob Salo |
This is the first time I have attempted to echo my own artwork in poetic form. The poetry in this book has been inspired by an obsessive desire to search out my inner most thoughts and feelings from my everyday life experiences.
Some of the words are based on my own feelings but most are just life moments & observations that we all have experienced at one time or another.
The artwork in some cases was developed with a definite purpose in mind and others were developed through a process of exploration & experimentation. These are the artistic endeavors I enjoy the most.
The combination of my poetry and artwork hopefully leaves enough room for the reader of this book to explore my perspectives and also draw on his or her own interpretations & introspective viewpoints.

' In my travels around the world I am always on the lookout for interesting subject matter. As a professional videographer, cameraman and a graphic design graduate of the Ontario College Of Art In Toronto Ontario, I have acquired a large of amount of visual elements that I can later combine and use in interesting ways to express what I felt at the time I captured that perfect moment with my camera. I enjoy searching for new material and can't wait to get back home to explore the new potential that computer technology has brought to creative expression.. All my work is original throughout the combined medias I use and completely hand painted and executed by use of the electronic pen and a wacom tablet. The incredible brushes that can be assigned to this pen can simulate the painting feel and action of watercolor, oils, pastels, you name it but the expression itself is still in the control of the hand and the eye of the creator for the enjoyment of the beholder. Hi All,
Just a little update - I spoke with Bob briefly yesterday since he was having frustration over something on his tablet, and with too many distractions in real time. He also commented on his frustration over not remembering "things." We talked a little about how our medications can get in the way of our memories and that it is "normal" and how it can make us more frustrated at nurses, family, friends and even that damn tablet! I told him I'd call him back in a day or two... since I was probably one of those distractions that he didn't need at the moment... he replied with a laugh, then said, "yeah, you're probably right!" ;)
More when I know more...
Thank you everyone for keeping Bob in thoughts, hearts or in whatever way you do - I know he appreciates it. :)

“Artist Bob Salo has successfully captured the natural beauty of Ontario North. The painting series in the book reflect artist Salo’s fine nature of using soft brushes and cool colour palette. This book provides viewers with some of stunning views of the Canada’s landscapes.” Thao Chuong

I think “Who Dares Question” is Bob Salo’s most interesting book. The title hit me by surprise, simply because I somehow mistakenly perceived that artist Salo were never in favour of something provoking in his fine style of art.
I really love his provoking thoughts about those artworks presenting in the book, especially some of his short poetic verses.
Following is my most favourite poem of artist Salo’s in Haiku style
Disguise
Master disguise, half face
………….ire
But better than a two-faced

Wow, there are so many of his works I am loving. Thank you Donna for posting this thread. For me it was an introduction to Bob Salo and his work. It is sad to know one is loosing a friend or family member but much sadder to have never known them. I'm sure it has been said in the thread somehow but with so much life the artist has given to these works, certainly a part of him will live forever in the art and that maybe helps a tiny bit.

A Book Of Amish Proverbs & Artwork By Bob Salo |
About The Author
In my travels around the world I am always on the lookout for interesting subject matter.

I generally use my still or video camera to capture moments that have artistic potential. Using these photos as a basic start to my paintings allows me the base point and freedom to completely transform it into a new and different artistic expression. I paint by hand in layers to add various textural qualities to the painting. I set my own color palettes, and use various electronic brushes to create that dramatic final statement that point and shoot reference photographs rarely have. I have spent the last three years developing a unique painterly style that I believe is akin to the more traditional mediums we all have grown to know and love_________________________________________________________________________________

Hi Everyone -
Update - In February the Salo family had a "family" day where relatives gathered to visit with Bob. Bob's elderly parents (95 years old!) were brought to town to visit with him. As anyone can imagine, it was difficult for his parents to see their son in Hospice... Many family members were worried about his mom, and thought that she might not survive if she survived her son. She passed away in her sleep a few days ago...
I spoke to Carolyn yesterday, just after the service for Bob's mother... she said she has been so careful on the ice all winter but when she went to her in-laws after her mother-in-law passed, she slipped and fell on the ice - her wrist/arm took the full brunt and she fractured her wrist. The doctor put a cast on it, but it's not a perfect set, so they'll see how it is doing in 2 weeks when they'll know whether they need to correct it. From what she said, the doctor told her she jammed her other bones into her wrist! OUCH!
I spoke to Bob last evening... he is having more of a difficult time talking between breaths... always happy to hear from me and I'm always surprised that he immediately recognizes my voice.
Lastly, Bob is tiring more easily. His memory is suffering now; he is easily frustrated while ever so busily trying to tie up all loose ends with his final creative endeavor. Obviously, that is probably easier said than done being paraplegic in a Hospice bed. His family has assured and reassured that they will make sure it's finished in the event that he passes first... that in and of itself is very frustrating for Bob (and his family) since he wants to see it to completion. :(
These are now trying times for the Salo family. They send their heartfelt thank you to each of you...
His work in Haiti is his "baby..." Thanks and I appreciate all you are doing to let Bob know you're thinking of him by posting his "babies" on this thread.
Sincerely,
Donna

Senses
Imagine a colour
then think of three
three new colours...
how will they blend?
how will they play?
upon the palette
upon the skies
of endless peaceful days...
One day
that door will open
a different realm
of unseen views
till then
the colours here
are just the ones
that for us
you choose
and from them the beauty
that you infused...
Colours of wisdom
colours of light
they come from those
who see with deepest sight
and those with art
of greatest might
you chose them all
and they are great
a majestic call
art lives
upon this wonderous wall
a man whose work
stands ten feet tall!

'Windows Of The Soul is about eyes.
It is my hope that the artwork in this book conveys my passion for this unfortunate but proud nation, a nation that for the most part remains so removed and out of place with the rest of the world.'

Dear Friends of Bob…
I had hoped by now that Admin would have made my changes to both the Title and OP of this thread but since it has not yet happened - I want you to know:
Bob passed away last night at 10:30 pm.
It has been my absolute pleasure to know Bob. He has always been a dear friend and my heart hurts knowing he will not be on this earth any longer.
I know no other way but to mourn over the loss of Carolyn's husband, her sons' father and my friend.
I know he is In The Spirit and with Christ...
But I will rejoice that, another day.
I will share more about Bob later - when I am not so weepy.
My sincere condolences to You over the loss of your friend, Bob.

Rest in peace, Bob Salo.

A small tribute to Bob from my heart.
In our sorrow be with us
In our sorrow your paintings bring us joy
and remind us of the man behind them.
From the faces of each girl and boy
you reached out so we could find them.
From faces that smile through all despair
through your art to us they came.
In our sorrow we will be there
and in our heart you will remain.
Rest peacefully Bob. God bless.

'The end is only the beginning'

Donna, do you have the address for Joy and Hope of Haiti so that we can make donations?
Marlene, thank you for asking. I do not... but I believe this is the website:
http://www.joyandhopeofhaiti.com/
This is a rough week for Carolyn and her family so I am asking very few questions and just taking what she gives me when she texts me.
I heard from Joy and I think the plan is to send Carolyn flowers to her home, together... we both plan to donate to The Joy & Hope of Haiti in Bob's name, as well.
Hope the link is helpful. When I hear back from Carolyn, I'll ask if I have the right link to the charity - but considering the information on the site, I'm 99.9% it's the right one. But, I'd wait for confirmation.

Dear Donna and Marlene, What a great job you both are doing! Terrific tribute and promotion, so wonderful to learn you'll both be taking over Bob's cause! I'm sure his family is so happy you two are taking care of the details so they're free to grieve quietly, and honestly. Really good work! :-)

Kelley, I have done nothing except try to support one dear friend as she has so beautifully taken care of another......
as an aside, if this is the correct website, there is going to be a major fundraiser at the end of May....some artists may want to consider donating art instead of writing a check to Bob's pet charity....

Hello, Hello...
Just a pop in to say that today is Bob Salo's memorial service. It actually begins at noon EST and goes through 1:00 pm. Because I can't be there with Carolyn at this time, I assured her that I am in solidarity... and will be taking the hour to think about the many wonderful conversations I've had with Bob; his fabulous art; his mission in life - and his passion for the children and people of Haiti.
I hope those of you who also have fond memories, may also take a few moments today to remember our friend, his art and his passion.
I'll close this thread in the next day or two.
Thanks,
--Donna Proctor
EDIT @ Marlene - Yes, it is the correct website.
