REAL HORSE POWER Published In National Geographic Magazine

COLTS NECK — Readers of “National Geographic” who examined the August issue closely may have noticed that a Colts Neck resident had a photograph published in the magazine.

“National Geographic” editors printed a photograph that was taken by Mike Quinn, 25, of Colts Neck. Quinn shot the photo at a thoroughbred horse breeding farm in Colts Neck where his father has worked as the manager and caretaker for 20 years.

“We always bring the horses into the barn before it snows. I set myself up [to take pictures] by telling my father to wake me up in the morning,” Quinn said. “The horses went crazy when we let them out of the barn. They were running around kicking the snow.”

Quinn snapped the winning shot just as Private Miracle, a thoroughbred mare who races at Monmouth Park, Oceanport, jumped through a mound of snow.

Grand Prize Winner In National Geographic Photo Contest

February 24th, 2015 - Colts Neck, NJ

Grand Prize Winner In National Geographic Photo Contest

COLTS NECK – When Colts Neck amateur photographer Mike Quinn submitted a photo he took five years ago to a National Geographic contest on Instagram, he didn’t expect to win.

“I thought it was a long shot, a very long shot,” he said.

But this month, that long shot changed and Quinn was told he won the grand prize – a trip for two to Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.

“It was pretty big of a shock,” he said.

Quinn, 29, said he found the contest on National Geographic’s online community Your Shot. While participants could enter as many photos as they wanted, Quinn said he only had one that fit the criteria.

The photo, taken in 2009 using a Kodak point-and-shoot camera, was from an airplane while flying over the Grand Canyon. Quinn told National Geographic that he took the photo when he was flying to Las Vegas and was woken up by the captain telling the passengers that they were flying over the national park.

Photography Exhibit, Cuba On Display

By Melissa Rodriguez

South Florida News Service

For artists with extensive experience in photography, showcasing their work publicly is often expected, but for 22-year-old Daniel Hernandez, a self-taught photographer, who began to follow his passion nine months ago, being the only artist representing Miami and exhibiting his work next to renown Cuban artists at a local gallery has marked the milestones of his so far short career.

“I feel very exited, way too much, and very nervous because this is not normal. It’s not something that I was expecting,” said Hernandez.

It all began with a recent trip to Havana, Cuba, a country he left five years ago.

When Hernandez walked around the cobble-stoned streets of Havana with his Nikon D5200, he realized he wanted to break away from portraying a destroyed city that caused pity but embrace the beauty of its historical architecture.

“Mi Habana en Adoquines,” meaning, “My Havana in Cobble Stones,” as he...

Vintage Spanish Muralism LTPs

February 24th, 2015 - Tobyhanna, Pa

Vintage Spanish Muralism LTPs

Spanish Muralism or Mexican muralism was the promotion of mural painting starting in the 1920s, generally with social and political messages as part of efforts to reunify the country under the post Mexican Revolution government. It was headed by “the big three” painters, Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros. From the 1920s to about 1970s a large number of murals with nationalistic, social and political messages were created on public buildings, starting a tradition which continues to this day in Mexico and has had impact in other parts of the Americas, including the United States where it served as inspiration for the Chicano art movement. Note the fine grains in these image creating the textures one would expect to find in these amazing Spanish stretched canvas Mural prints.
