Oak Island October by Karen Cook -Whether there is still gold buried on Oak Island in Nova Scotia's Mahone Bay or not is still an unanswered question, but I found gold in the autumn leaves lining the shoreline!
Located in Mahone Bay on the east coast of Canada in Nova Scotia, Oak Island is one of more than 350 islands in the bay and is home to what is regarded as the world's longest running treasure hunt.
As the story goes, in the late 1700s, 3 young boys discovered a depression in the ground under an oak tree on the island. Believing that pirates including Captain Kidd had buried treasure, they dug a hole, discovering a series of platforms, at different intervals and depths. According to the legend, some believe they discovered buried treasure but left due to superstition and fear.
The story was published in local newspapers and the fame of the island spread. The treasure hunt was on! Over the next centuries, many attempts were made to recover what was thought to be fabulous treasures, Aztec Gold, Shakespeare's manuscripts, the Ark of the Covenant, and the Holy Grail.
During the digs, lives were lost and the 'curse' of Oak Island was born. According to the legend...7 must die before the treasure is found. To this date...6 men have lost their lives in the search.
Oak Island is privately owned and you can only access the island with their permission. There is a museum and interpretive center open to the public during the summer months, where artifacts recovered are on display.
In 2014 The History Channel and Prometheus Entertainment launched a reality Television show following the search for the treasure by the island's owners, brothers Rick and Marty Lagina, and their partners, Dan and Dave Blackenship, and Craig Tester.
On a chartered boat tour with Tony Sampson, current crew member of the Oak Island Fellowship and skipper of Salty Dog Sea Tours, we were able to approach the island to appreciate its natural beauty, especially at this time of year.
The autumn colors were on full display and mirrored in the calm waters of Mahone Bay.
