Description
Lower Falls on the Kancamagus Highway by Karen Cook - As you leave Albany New Hampshire and start your drive on the famous Kancamagus Scenic Byway, or 'Kanc', it isn't long before you arrive at the Lower Falls. The water of the Swift River cascades over the huge granite boulders, leaving tempting swimming pools that on a hot summer day are filled with bathers of every age.
The Kancamagus Scenic Byway is 34 miles long and traverses the White Mountains. Stunning views of the mountains, steep ravines and multiple cascades make this one of the most beautiful drives in the northeast, especially in foliage season.
The highest point on the highway is Kancamagus pass at just under 3000 feet. As you start your descent down, you are encountering grades of 9% on steep, winding curves of road! It is truly a spectacular drive. The Lower Falls now has a scenic viewing platform that overlooks the rushing water for a great photo opportunity.
