Description
Little River Pump House Belfast Maine by Karen Cook - Driving along the narrow and curving U.S. Route 1 along midcoast Maine, it is hard to concentrate on your driving! There is beauty everywhere, especially when it is autumn in New England, and you can find it in the most unlikely of spots, if you are willing to venture off the beaten path!
Like this breathtaking view...this is the Little River Pump House and dam, and it is part of the Belfast Maine Water District
After two fires in the late 19th century that devastated the town of Belfast it was deemed necessary to improve the town's water supply.
A dam was built on the 55 acre reservoir and a brick pump house complete with a cupola to keep an eye out for enemy submarines during WWII was also erected.
The striking red brick of the pump house, as it stood guard over the dam as water spilled over from the Little River Reservoir was even more beautiful on an autumn day in Maine.
