I love connecting with other creative people. For me, creatives are a whole different world. And there are just some very cool people here that I enjoy learning from :)

"What is your main reason for participating in the discussions on this site?"
Doing less and less of it lately. Basically tired of the bs responses (no matter the topic normally) from the same usual 1 or 2 people. Life's too short to put up with it.

I agree with Greg....I mostly lurk, but don't read a handful of people's posts at all....broken record, so there is no point. But when I feel I have something to contribute that might help others, I participate. Sometimes I just have something random to say.

I have found discussions to be useful if you're looking for help with certain things but after today I doubt that I would get involved in any again. I get enough drama at my full time job.

It's entertaining and can be informative. The nature of my work means lots of short bursts of waiting, so reading/writing here fills those moments.

Same as Sharon, I spend a lot of time here, but mostly just reading select threads. I participate in one particular thread just about everyday, and then skip around looking at images and other topics.

because my avatar really isn't me, he's real and forces me to type stuff....

I find the community to be more open minded than most, or at least more candid.
I enjoy interacting with those who are interested in the exchange of ideas, and not just opinions.
It's a great place to learn how to represent your art, and hone your online voice.

I only participate every now and then. Enjoy perusing the comments and portfolios and gleaning helpful information.
Sometimes, I will ask a question. For instance: Ronald Walker, are any of your images for sale as prints? Just curious.

Because sometimes your friends and the people you know well are more like family than your own family.
Also, I believe that true success is not so much what we accomplish in life but, rather, how much we help others reach their true potential.

Professional license. Art and art appreciation is a wonderful occupation any way one looks at it. Therefore sharing the "art spirit" is what I seek in the "Discussions".

Just so I can talk to you Ronald.
BTW I do not have my paintings priced on FAA. This discourages price comparisons. If they don't like my art enough for that extra step then I do not care if they buy.

I have to admit I really enjoy Mike's critiques and always look for them...and often learn bits and pieces too. I'm currently trying to learn about licensing, so I look for those threads. I've ordered two books as well. I love to help out others too if I happen to have something valuable to say....sort of "pay it forward" for all the help I've received :) Often I find myself spending too much time here, and then I'll read someone saying, "got to get back to work" and that's a virtual kick in the butt for me to get off here and do some work.

There are no creatives in my local circle of family and friends.
All my art friends and acquaintances are online -- in this forum and other forums and sites, too. The same goes for my writing, interior decorating and design, supercar and classic car enthusiasts, television and film, and other (eccentric) 'friends'.
Online discussions are a great place for both learning and sharing -- especially in the dead of night, when I'm surrounded by all those pesky 'sleepers'.
Still, I only pop online when I need a break from real-world duties and obligations; I don't live here.

Sarah I recently signed an exclusive contract with the Mahlstedt Gallery in New Rochelle, NY. Any purchases of my work must go through them. I am mostly on this site to talk to Kevin anyway ;)

Ronald, wish you the very best with your new gallery relationship. Gee, and I thought you had a new marketing strategy you weren't sharing with us.

... to learn stuff, ask questions, maybe answer questions (or at least share an opinion), but mainly to interact with people who have some common interests.

I'm not sure Ronald, but it might have to do with the fact that like most creatures we share the planet with we to are social beings.

I am very extraverted. Cant help myself. I began 13 months ago with no art. The constant interaction has shaped how I operate in
the art world. It has greatly helped me make my way. I owe people here small debts of gratitude all the way round.
This forum is easy going because of the good moderation of the members. Try Yahoo if you do not believe me.
At least on FB with 1700 friends if I do not like what you are saying you are one less friend, not much of a loss.
Other message boards are more and more like Yahoo. Not here.
That said I have questioned some of the smaller things going on here lately. And wondered how much I want to be involved.
Business people need to be very open particularly accessible to get ahead. Many of you do not like the concept of being business people.
You are a business person whether you are good at it or bad at it. It is your lot in life until you get a govt job. So make the most of it.
And perhaps be a little less critical of the next guy.

Mario,
I know without having the govt job. I agree.
So back to square one. You are your own business person.

Big congrats, Ronald. That sounds both exciting and intimidating.
Quite an opportunity. Good luck!

It's simply about connecting with other artists-photographers, for me, or maybe learning something new, sharing a story someone else might enjoy, airing a concern, being amused or amusing, encouraging and/or supporting others and, if I can, answering a member's question.

Interesting with the gallery. I imagine the contract is like with a real estate agent? If they don't move the product as expected then you can get out of it at some point?
I don't think I would enter into an exclusive, all encompassing deal. I'd want to be able to sell reproductions online.

@Ronald Walker: Oh...I thought your question 'why discussions' was a way of asking -- why not call it a technical forum, or a Q+A forum, or an off-topic cafe, or some such. ;-))
There can be lots of helpful information, interesting ideas, and valuable insights shared here. I'm always trying to improve my photography and my marketing. The discussions provide some food for thought. I also like to share my own ideas and insights from time to time if I think it can add some small value.

I'm mostly a lurker here, although every once in awhile, like now, I'll pop out and type something. (Lurker: Is there a better word for that? It sounds too much like a horror film monster.) I have found some fantastic information and inspiration here, so thanks for that everyone.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
To:
Ask questions, share information, learn from others, vent, give opinions, babble on, talk about themselves, be a comedian, ask stupid questions, learn from others, make meaningful contributions, , to kill time, to feel important, give stupid answers, be political, prolong discussions, change topics, show poor gramer skills, help others, post their images, to ask why discussions or why anything, self entertainment, somewhere to text more, kill more time, make new friends, push their art, participate meaningfully, enjoy using debating skills, be opinionated, ..................and such.

I participate because I forget what I'm supposed to be doing. It's therapeutic for me. Thank you, FAA.

Choco, the thing is with visual art that differs from music or theatre is you work alone, you have very little if any feedback from your peers or anyone else. Take a bow to the audience or dodge the rotten tomatoes and the boos, instant feedback does not happen in visual arts so much usually . Exception could be when my cat puked on my painting I had on the floor.

...........didn't intend to snub you Dave....curfew doesn't always work with my on line activities......it's more like part of a plea bargain.......you know maybe it's..A A........
