What Is Your Purpose In This Online Community?

I have been in many forums and communities over my internet years (starting with AOL chats in 1992). I then begun looking for that type of forum/s geared more to intellectual topics across the board.
The longest I have been a citizen of an online community was 5 years in an underground, alternative lifestyle type of community. There, I was a longtime senior member. I enjoyed for the time being or until it last it. Closed that chapter of my life. Devolved to the Facebook and Google+ thing too at one point….I am definetly not a team player.
From time to time and depending where I am in my life I seek to return to forums because I like to give it again a chance.

FAA for me is in test drive mode. So far I enjoy the site and its fun habitants.
I joined to exchange views with the like-minded on the subject matter of interest "fine arts". Is it going to last? I am not sure. I do not do well with moderation nor under a ruler, but I thread along as needed.

1. What is your purpose for joining the FAA forums and debates?
2. Do you feel is something necessary to you as an artist?
3. Does it help you feel more accepted as you are part of a social community?

entertainment purposes, mostly, and to help mentor the young ones starting out.
Necessary? nah....I was a hermit for most of my professional life.
It really doesn't matter whether I am accepted or not...I have meet some great people, would love to meet many more.

#1.Well Diana at first I thought it would help me sell my sculptures, I soon found out that was not the case, but no worry I sell them just fine on my own.
#2.The debates can be fun, although I get more from non-liked minded groups of people than like minded.
#3. Diana, I like you do not do well with moderation or under a ruler. I don't really look at it in terms of being accepted or not. Plus getting banned does not re-enforce that accepted feeling. Lol

Alleviate boredom. I find art endlessly fascinating. Sadly, most people don't. This is my Big Chance to talk about art with people who are actually interested in art.

1. Witty, art-related banter. Sharing and learning things. This place has a rather fun weirdo factor.
2. Nope
3. Doesn't really matter to me at all if I'm accepted or not. I choose if I accept this kind of interaction online, or if I leave it. I like you guys, though. :)

I am a hermit, plus I live in a small Asian town with few English speakers outside the expat barstool crowd. I get a mixed fix from forums and just run my eyes over top topics once a day. The result: Somedays I learn about FAA biz (I could still be unaware of pillows or even 'new' artist websites) At times I see a debate that interest me and dive in. Other times I just learn by reading discussions on issues I need to know more about - or I get introduced to alternative perspectives. In any event it offers a comon topic of interest shared in place where I do not need to overcome both cultural perceptions and langaue barriers just to chat, on the rare occasion I wish to do so.

Marlene is here just cause' she likes to smack us silly once and a while! LOL I also have been a very "shy" and hermit type person most of my life. (Funny that many of us are) I am greatly entertained, made to laugh, learn, and get pretty ticked-off periodically. So to sum it all up "stimulated"!!!

1. When I first came upon this forum, I just HAD to join all those WILD and CRAZY GUYS already here
...Why I remained though,, was in a small way to keep this 80 year old brain from atrophying

2. If the alternative is working alone in a garret...Yes

3.It does. But when I feel that acceptance waning (perhaps,as a result of a series of inappropriate and inane comments) I turn on the "Cuddly" ploy .

There is such a wealth of experience here. It is community based without living in the same town. Roger is the mayor, of course, so you know, his cuddly ploy wins votes every time! There is always something to be learned from here, and that is the point. Everyone has something to give from their perspective whether you agree or disagree.

Also I look forward to Marlene's comedic acrobatics, her keen sense of funny and typos. I have to add her sojourned years of experience and wisdom is worth the time here, among others.

So I don't really think about why I am here, I am not sure I care.
As an artist i do enjoy listening to the story of the artists on the site, much to learn.
No I like others do not care if I am accepted, but hey.....I am at the age, where spitting on the street and burping in public and other things doesn't phase me.

Entertainment, I like to talk about art with artist. Connect with other artist, learn a bit!

Here are just a communication platform can, of course, there are many other types of. . . Too much! I like it here, because through this platform, I know some very good artists and friends. . . Also, when I was at work, a lot of the time is boring, I can come here to see what other artists are thinking or doing. . . I enjoyed less than three months time here. . . But learning a lot of knowledge. . . I never knew before. . . Included. . . . Too much! Good and bad exist anywhere. . . Do something you enjoy it.

Make life a little more interesting. I learn a few things. Hoped to actually sell some art but have come to realize its like the lottery. Fills in the gaps for this chapter of my life until I can move forward.

No Janine I burp publicly and spit in the street. Gas's, no longer do I try to squeak my shoe to make it sound like a squeaked shoe.

1. What is your purpose for joining the FAA forums and debates?

Its Facebook for artists. This is what makes FAA family. Helping each other make it through life.

2. Do you feel is something necessary to you as an artist?

Yes. When I was in photography / art school it was impressed on me that to be an established artist its a good idea to first be accepted by your peers, then from the art community at large, and finally from the public. Like YouTube, this is the place to be for artists to get to know each other with an international community.

3. Does it help you feel more accepted as you are part of a social community?

I would say it more so helps me confirm my thoughts and endeavors. Sean, the owner of FAA, has said a few times here that of the top fifty best selling artists on FAA only one or two of them are regularly on the forums. This means, as he says, that artists looking to sell are asking advice from artist who mostly are not the top sellers. Likewise, if there is any consistent I have learned is that every artist here does their own thing, what works for them. Learning what their own thing is helps me confirm what my own thing is. Does this make sense to you?

Lisa Kaiser

Roger the cuddly ploy really made me laugh. LOL.

I don't know why I'm here.

Initially I wanted to make money, but I succeeded in making less, giving more, and making even more friends! No one would ever suspect I love being alone. I stay because being here makes me a better artist. I'm overwhelmed at the rate of learning, so I'll stay until I get bored.

Facebook and all the other networking bores me to death. The social political scene bores me to death. I'm truly fascinated by art.

Gregory Andrus

I love this community at FAA. My purpose in being here is to soak up like a sponge the many very talented artists that call this community home, and learn fro you all. And also to see what interesting topics I may want to follow or participate in. I too was hoping tot make money here. That hasn't been realized yet, but alas, the friendships I have made here with so many of you already have far eclipsed my desire for making money. This is truly an extraordinary community. I guess that is not a purpose, but that is a big reason I come here at least once a day...

You know I have a lot of back and forth communications where I am told more or less
I can not do what I am doing. Not necessarily in those words.

The truth on my side of the monitor.....

You guys put a lot of wind in my sails. I naturally like all of you. I can relate to all of you.

For all the wind that blows the wrong way, JMO, I simply need to tack. And I do.

I am hardly what people call shy, but I was a very pent up artist until these last few months.

I appreciate these boards far more than I hate them. LOL

Where else can you watch a reality show with a cast of characters and new ones daily. All centered around Art. All peddling
there goods. Pretty entertaining. Always something to learn or I would be bored. I'm always moved to see someone come with a problem for advice and condolence. Plus it is easy to follow while painting etc.
I think it can take over your life if you get to involved. I suppose that is alright by some though.

Jim, is this a really a reality show? Well, I guess it's as "real" as anything they put on TV. See Bill's "emotion" thread, TV producers probably couldn't script anything better.

to find some interesting and inspiring work - have some exchanges with the artist
about the forum - I'm not so sure - in my European taste there are too many claqeurs here

Jason Christopher

well....... its kind of adictive in small measures and the wackiness can be enticing, as are soem of the debates and yep its a place to dump your humungous humour and post your words of woderment and vent the steams of a boiling cooker pot

1 complete accident, as are any words, lead here by a post on a comment.
2 unsure of the premise, the issues or how to draw the conclusion
3 possibly catastrophic but life always is to the individual as we come to rest rotting in a box. At least i dont have to rent a garage or pay for the funeral.

ps is everyone an AI construct?.. not that this place seems... unreal man...

I like and agree with most of Marlene's answers. Myself, I just like to mess with peoples heads!

Dan Carmichael

As Marlene said, entertainment mostly.

Threads that are truly informative, contain knowledge, and help premium users with their FAA experience usually get fewer replies.

Threads that contain rants, nonsense, useless babble, and that are mostly constructed with personality conflicts receive huge participation.

If you like that sort of thing, and if you have no life and have nothing better to do than to sit in a forum all day, press refresh every 5 seconds and try to be the first to pounce on somebody, FAA will be fun for you.

(Ummmm.. just my personal opinion)

1. What is your purpose for joining the FAA forums and debates?

My original intent was to learn and interact with like-minded people. While it has been a learning experience in the arts, it has also been a study in human behavior.

2. Do you feel is something necessary to you as an artist?

Necessary in only that several of the forum discussions have been helpful in improving my work.

3. Does it help you feel more accepted as you are part of a social community?

I have enjoyed chatting online with fellow FAA members. Who knows, some of us may even meet someday. It's more important I be myself than be accepted as part of an online social community. If nothing else, the forum helps artists' names and work become more recognizable.

Wow. How lucky for you, Diana!

This just popped up. It will tell you many things about the FAA forums experience and what you may find here.

yes I agree and dittos many of your replies……this is about the 4th time I try to post my long reply. I have now given up.

I went through an entire list of posters one by one. My apologies for lacking partecipation after the initial post. A liquid spill on my keyboard caused me to halt the replies. Hopefully no damage to my laptop.

When I said about being "accepted" I did not intend that you were looking for acceptance as an individual but as wanting to be in a place to belong with people of the same mind set….in this case interest.

So few of you have said "I don't care about being accepted"…….I meant it in that way. I think the community seems pretty open minded, so far for what I have seen. Being an artist you have too.

1. What is your purpose for joining the FAA forums and debates?

Originally it was too learn how to market my stuff better here. And I did that mostly by reading every thread I could find long before I began posting.

2. Do you feel is something necessary to you as an artist?

No, but I do find it fun and a nice break from reality.

3. Does it help you feel more accepted as you are part of a social community?

I've said this about Facebook often, but in some ways the FAA forums is a great anti-social network! I'll leave that open to multiple interpretations, good, bad and indifferent.

CHERYL EMERSON ADAMS

What is your purpose for joining the FAA forums and debates?

One main purpose is to get information about changes of the FAA site that effects your presence and business here. Sometimes it is the only channel you learn about changes - through other members observations.

Roger Swezey

Well, I certainly hope that for whatever purpose I'm here, I will never get that upset to leave not only this forum, but FAA in it's entirety.

Diana, if you are reading this....PLEASE COME BACK
