The new black? I don't understand. I try to avoid black in my paintings, I don't have black on my palette. I mix my darks, usually some combination of burnt sienna and ultramarine blue. Is that the kind of response you are looking for?

........a color that is currently so popular that it rivals the traditional status of black as the most reliably fashionable colour.
Hmmm black is not actually a colour

New black? Old black? I don't know. I like the colour black. I include black in my imagery. Black clothes. Crows. Ravens. Space. Night. Dark Ambient music. 'Paint It Black' by the Rolling Stones. Black is always cool.

Seriously, I didn't know that black was the "in" color right now or recently, but I've never claimed to be fashionable.

The new black? A dot that covers the MoMA since its inception.
It is an invisible black.

Raw umber is my choice of black. I love the richness of it when I paint my dark backgrounds.

I have 6 black dress shirts in my closet and 2 drawers set aside for just black tshirts. I try other things but i always go back to black. Not charcoal grey. Black. I only use black cameras and lenses.

I don't have a new black, Lutz...I still use my old tried and true black to start every single painting I have ever painted. It establishes the composition, movement and contrast to name a few.
It has never failed me.
I don't believe in change for change sake....change doesn't guarantee a better outcome, just a different one.
Just take a look at the United St.......oops, can't talk politics.

According to the hit TV show "Orange is the New Black".
And speaking of orange and black, here's an opportunity for me to sneak in an image on this subject.....hope I don't get banned! :-(

David, black is always in. Aside from that, I agree with Edward on charcoal grey. Also, that sherbet shade of orange is everywhere right now!

In Florida in the summer its a black Aloha shirt and a black straw fedora after 6 for me.

Doesn't that get hot? Oh, after 6. I guess that's ok. Just no black knee socks on the beach please.

I have so many Jackie cardigan sweaters. Black is my favorite. I would say "Cardigan Black". I just made it up. :)
Love black in my attire.

My guess is that (more times than not), the phrase, "the new black", might refer to race, ... as in a new shared racial identity among African Americans, or a new level of financial well being in certain African Americans who grew up poor but then became extremely wealthy via professional sports or highly successful corporate ventures.
But I also get the feeling that a lot of people are using it for a lot of other situations. It seems to be becoming a metaphor thing, where you can say anything is "the new black", if whatever you are talking about is somehow replacing a previous idea.
... like if the color blue, all of a sudden, became widely wildly popular, then blue would be known as "the new black", because black is customarily the go-to color in many things like fashion or font color. If web designers started using blue fonts, then blue would there be "the new black". Or if formal dress started to lean towards blue, then blue would become "the new black" there. Instead of "the little black dress", women would now talk about "the little blue dress" as the standard go-to fashion choice for many social occasions.

... or, as Gregory S. suggested, it might simply mean a notable rise in favor of something that used to be, went away, and has now returned to favor.
Where have you seen this phrase? Knowing this will help zero in on what it might mean there.

Black has a lot of feelings attached to it.
Evil, dark, scary, witches, black hole ,sadness, death, grim reaper, black cats, funerals, etc.
Are there any better feeling for black? Something happier?

I always associate Johnny Cash with black, and whenever I hear is music it makes me smile.

One of black's very positive associations is with surplus or profit, financially. As in, not in the red.

The only New Blk is the Design Firm my son works for as a Visual Designer in Omaha, NE.
I wear black mostly seven days a week.
My furniture is black, my patio rod iron furniture is black, so are my umbrellas!
I love the color and have used it in my photography and art.
ummmm.....new black? interesting..........wonder what it is?? Good question.

Ed called it right - charcoal.
Which is also what black looks like on some super-matte papers because of the lack of reflectivity.

naw, mauve was pinker, purplier, lighter.
mauve is embedded in my brain.....every so called interior decorator wanted to use it in commercial spaces. No amount of explaining to them that fluorescent lighting will turn it pink would help. I was doing damage control for about 8 years.....

According to my wardrobe, black doesn't need a 'new'. Black is always cool, always relevant, always intriguing.
Btw -- orange is NOT the new black. Everybody knows orange is the new blue . . . because I said so! ;-)

The new black is black. Same as the old black. Ever see anyone drool over a little puce dress?
Jim, exactly. And the jade that keeps popping up looks suspiciously like it's skirting Hunter Green.
Jean, the puce from Monstors Inc?
Mike: On my desk, Sulley. The pink copies go to Accounting, the fuchshia ones go to Purchasing, and the goldenrod ones go to Roz. Leave the puce.
Sully (after sorting through folders): Oh, so that's puce

Bradford,
That Amy Winehouse video is super.
My closest friend use to say about her first marriage...."one of us was going to end up dead, and I was
going to end up in jail". At the time of the fall out she put her then husband's head through the wall five times.
She was one tough German horse woman. He was a 6' 3" American GI. She was pregnant with their second son. He
was put on the front porch with his bags unconscious.
She did better with men after that.
