An Incredibly Easy, Super Delicious Sandwich Recipe

I ran across this recipe the other day. Some may know about it, but I did not so I am passing it on.

It is for a delicious sandwich that is shockingly easy to make. I modified it a little and also added a few options.

The original recipe:

Slice a fresh avocado onto a piece of whole wheat toast (open face), drizzle with a little Tabasco, salt to taste. Eat and enjoy.

It really is surprisingly good.

Here's my mods:

First, I use Frank's Red Hot instead. Tabasco is good and all, but only has "hot." Frank's also has hot, but also has an incredibly good flavor that plays well with the avocado.

Observations: works best with whole wheat bread. The nutty flavor works well with the avocado and Frank's.

Because the sliced avocado has a tendency to squiggle off the toast, I make a guacamole sauce. But I am careful not to make a traditional guacamole that might contain lemon, lime, garlic, coriander, etc. because those flavors don't work well with the sandwich. I just smush up the avocado in a bowl with a tad water to thin it out. Dollop onto the toast to prevent the avocado slices from flying across the room.

Mods / additions:

- add a slice of bacon. Yummy.
- add a slice of grilled chicken. Yummy.

I'm still looking for new mods.

Enjoy this great, delicious, and easy to prepare summer sandwich.

I think that sounds really good! Some sandwiches you just can't fully appreciate until you taste them. Like peanut butter and dill pickle, for example.

Or one of my favourite's from childhood - peanut butter and sliced cucumber (which isn't that far off your suggestion, Cynthia)...

Put the avocado in a zip lock bag and smash it up leaving some chunks. This works great for guacamole also. In Mexico they use a mortar and pestle (molcajete) http://www.amazon.com/Authentic-Mexican-Volcanic-Molcajete-Mortar/dp/B001L3FS7A but the bag works pretty well if you don't have one. The bacon with some tomato sounds good as well as tomato and basil with a drizzle of olive oil. Avocado is excellent without anything. I loved living in Southern California where friends with avocado trees brought bags full of fresh ones for free.

It is indeed interesting especially when sliced avacado flies around the room. Smart idea to refrain their flight by smashing them into the toast.

Seriously though it does sound yummy especially with the chicken and bacon.

Funny you should mention avocado. Just last night I tried to cut one up for a salad and ended up with mushy fingers and slip-sliding events. Long been an avocado-lover, but I told myself never again. The best way I've found to eat them is right out of the shell. Cut in half, coax out that huge pit, then take a spoon and enjoy in its own container.

But yes, you are SO right that it goes perfectly with whole wheat bread. I will try tobasco next time, if there ever is a next time, lol.

Easy way to get the pit out. Karate chop it with a sharp knife. Sticks to the knife and doesn't ruin the fruit.

Chop with knife, twist, removes in seconds.

(Although I like to put the pit half on the counter in case I miss the chop. LOL)

Oh, ya, I forgot the twist part.

Also, getting it off the knife is an exciting adventure.

If you want to keep your avocado dip or unused portion from turning black, put the pit back in the container. It works like a charm.

I love avocados, some of my favourites are...

Bake an egg in hole... you need to scoop out a bit more then just the pit so the egg will fit. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes in the oven.

Or cut up chives, garlic, bacon, a little pepper, maybe tomato. (finely chopped) add whipped egg and mix well, then pour in avocado halves and bake...

Or, make a fruit salad of Watermelon, cherries, red grapes, fill avocado halves and serve with a touch of honey... yummy.

We call those great avocado sandwiches, Dogwoods... Avocado, mushed with a teaspoon of each Worcestershire, mayo, mustard - mix well.
Spread on toasted rye or whole grain bread, with salami, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers,.... or combination there off... the more the better for a really dogwood... lol

Cheers, Barbara
