Twice In The Past Week I Have Been White Screened

What is being white screened?

ANSWER: It is when you take 10 to 20 minutes to compose a thoughtful reply to a topic, only to encounter a white screen after you hit the "post" button. You open another browser window, to discover that the topic was closed at that exact moment that you posted your 10-20-minute-worked-on reply.

This has happened TWICE to me in one week. Do I have the magic touch or what?

Maybe, you're considered a troll...lol...just kidding. It's probable just a coincidence.

Happens to me all the time.. nature of the beast ... i guess

Robert Kernodle

... surely NOT a troll, Lisa K. (you were NOT kidding, ... truth in jest, etc. ... I'm hurt!)(^__^), ... rather part of the "beast" pointed out by Jean G.P.

YOU are part of that beast too.

We are all beast parts. There must be some good cooking jokes in that phrase somewhere, but I'm too lazy to carve them out at this time.

Let's all work on a poem. Here, I'll start with the title:

Ode To A Troll

'twas brilling and the slithy coves
did gyre and gimble in the forum
all mimsey were the rules of discussion decorum
and the heated scribes outrage [needed to rhyme with "decorum", but I had nothing]

Searching for spice to add to my gruel
I found a nice thread, my time to be cruel
Here they were talking all in a flutter
About the joys of mixing sugar with butter
I piped in not once but twice with a start
About the benefits of poached Koala heart
The glares I could sense from behind my screen
The stares of disbelief. Why would he? That's mean.

I know how you feel Robert.

You're posting your most cogent comment in a very heated discussion and WHAMO..THE WHITE SCREEN!!

WTF!!!

No matter how many times it happens, it never dawns on you that the thread was closed

Robert Kernodle

Nice poem, and nice rendition of how it feels to be white screened.

WTF indeed.

I was thinking about white screening some poor b***ard now by closing this thread, but nah, ... I'll be nice, because I have compassion.

Joe Burgess

With any website, I always copy my efforts to the clipboard before I hit "post". I've been burned too many times in the past.

Of course, when the thread is closed, I'm sitting there with a barrel full of knowledge and nowhere to put it.

Joe is the smartest one here.. I have always thought.. why didn't i just copy and then paste it .. by that time it would have been closed anyway and that would be the end of it.. and Robert.. I like being part of the beast although here that is not exactly what im considered but hey ..at least im a part of something heheheeh I won't use LOL because some people don't like it just hehehehehehe from now on although heheheheh is easier than LOL..

hey Robert.. maybe the dingos ate yor baby.. hehehehehe

Oh, I always copy/paste the more extensive responses, but I immediately delete them after I post. It doesn't matter in this case, because I must delete white-screened posts too. Why save wisdom that the world will never partake of?, ... lost in some Twilight Zone, inter-dimensional netherworld of white-screened digital signals that only aliens can access through advanced time/space manipulation?

Which is worse, ... getting white screened or getting "the finger"?

... or getting called a troll?(^_^)

Jean G.P., the "beast" is a bit too tame sometimes. Tame beasts employ the white-screening maneuver to deter passion. Too much passion can be a bad thing. Civilized artists should not nurture such mindless sensational reactions. Rather we should interact with great depth of engagement, only being totally and exceedingly nice to one another, ... like the rest of the real world (may I say it now?, ... hehehehehe)

I just got white screened trying to bring Blaine's thread back on track.
I think I might be responsible for killing it.
I feel kind of guilty now.
Nice run, Blaine.

Oh yes I have. Its kind of a freaky feeling! Your on a roll Robert!

"White screening" is probably coincidental. I doubt that there is some Wizard of Oz behind the curtain reading and assessing every single reply as it comes in, making an in-the-moment judgment to use any particular post as a reason to close the thread. I just think that with so many people here responding, the odds are not unusually low that white screening simply occurs by chance, not BECAUSE of the content of any one post but because whatever content was in the gate just happened to be there when a totally different impulse caused the thread to go bye bye.

Still it is a little annoying. A never-close, anything goes forum philosophy would eliminate white screening, but, of course, that would open up a whole different universe of annoying that far exceeded coincidental post zapping, at least from the FAA moderators' points of view.

In Robert world, the main forum would have no bounds, and it would be people who wanted a tamer environment who would be directed to the tamer forum. This would reflect the natural world more closely, as much as we might sometimes hate that. ... survival of the fittest, you know. Or maybe there it would be survival of the coolest heads.

LOL
And the moral of the story is:
Make it short! Brevity is the soul of wit.

A great survival strategy, Christine T., in the world of "white screening".

Keep it short. Keep it sugar-coated. Keep it impersonal.

Alexandra Till

Not sugar-coated, not impersonal, just short.

BTW, 'white screen' happened to me too :-)

I get the black flash screen of momentary death.

My Asus is meant for Display Port an Apple upper level monitor connection.

I have a Dell.....oooow.....that will only work with HDMI....

The mismatched monitor, HDMI, Dell give me a black screen about once an hour for three seconds.

I carry on....

"... the black flash screen of momentary death." Funny.

I have never experienced that one. Did you see Jesus or Buddha, or did you become one with the universe? Is it anything like flat lining? Did you see the light (no, of course not, it was the BLACK flash screen) ? Was there any white text on it? You do realize that being "white screened" is preferred by the WHOPPING majority of people on the internet right now.

Hyoye S., ... the phrase, "white screened" is a phrase that I made up to describe the experience someone has when he or she clicks on the "Post Reply" button to add a response to a discussion, and their computer screen goes totally white, because at that exact second, either the moderator or the person who started the discussion closed it.

I promise that I will not be the person to white screen you, but one of the moderators might, if they don't like how our discussion is going.

So, it is one of those crazy American phrases created by ... you guessed it ... a crazy American (namely, yours truly). (^_^)

If your mind is quick you wait and debate, but you know you are not splurging for a Mac.

Then you console yourself that it happens like a power outage that kills your bulb for a moment
during an earthquake, but you know it is only the monitor's communication system, not your hard drive
about to destroy all your work.

Your work surfaces and you carry on......

Dave

Life goes on after the "black flash screen of momentary death", just as life goes on after being "white screened".

Has my phrase entered the mass-culture vocabulary yet? ... right up there with "hashtag" or "LOL" or "BFF" or "WTF"

... guess I need to shorten it to two capital letters.

WS ... so you say that you've just been WSed (the verbal form)

Let's conjugate it now:

I white screen
You white screen
He, she, it white screens
We white screen,
You (plural) white screen
They white screen

Will this post get white screened? Let's press the "Post Reply" button and see.

I am sorry to burst your bubble but 'white screened' is what most of us call it when we get the white screen when coding or opening new sites that give the white screen

Not new I am afraid.

... new meaning.

... new context.

... possibly a more popular meaning and context.

Art is NOT new, but we are always trying to REmake it so.

My bubble remains in tact. (^__^) I do not need a new one.
