For years I used my own stylized, personalized version of the "Kilroy was here" cartoon icon. But here's the odd part. Twice, once each with two different bosses when leaving a note to my boss about some accomplishment made that night, or perhaps problem encountered, I got called into the office to explain the cartoon. I thought it was odd, and explained it to them in some detail:
Kilroy was seen mostly during WWII, with the caption "Kilroy was here.". I called my personalize alter-ego "Kiljoy" because sometimes I live up to my nickname Eeyore. I drew him with messy hair because I've always been infamous for this trait. There was a shipyard inspector who used to chalk the phrase "Kilroy was here" in various places he had inspected, presumably so that he wouldn't re-inspect what he had already inspected. The cartoon became linked to it somehow, and was a popular graffiti used by sailors and GIs all over the world.
Years later, however, it finally occurred to me WHY my bosses questioned me so closely about my cartoon though:
When I realized the "problem", I was mortified, and I have never told this story before now, today. Some of you understand immediately. Some of you, like me, will not understand at all anytime soon, unless perhaps if I give you the hint that you also may be just a bit naive about some things.
