First a light layer of PanPastel....Then I go in with Faber Castell Polychromos coloured pencil and Prismacolor Verithin......the key for me is LAYERS....you can always add but taking away is a pain...so I do layer upon layer of coloured pencil to get the details.

Beautiful artwork Sheena! So detailed. I was going to share my latest commissioned piece I had been working on but have no clue how to add images to the discussion posts that are not a image that has been uploaded to FAA.

Thank you guys for the compliments. I really enjoy seeing everyone's style! Ive always loved and craved the classical technique. I know its old school and boring to the masses but I keep going back to wanting to learn it more and more. I keep failing but practice practice practice and one day it will be the quality I want it...

Sheena you are so right. Layers upon layers give a depth and texture
that nothing else can. Your work is lovely and whimsical and magical.

Loretta gorgeous horses. They are hard for me to paint. I get way
frustrated. You have captured depth and color wonderfully. Cant wait to
to see it completed. On your Sonoran wip I really like the warm hues you
have in them.

Otil you never cease to amaze me. I wish you would make a video to show
your process in your works. They are amazing and full of wonder. WOW 5 feet
30 inches? A wall sculpture indeed. Wonderful!

I put this piece in a closet a couple of years ago, thinking it was beyond hope. I pulled it out recently, and thought that I might salvage it by filling in some areas previously left white, which were supposed to be bubbles. I'm pleased with the result, and happy to bring this one out of the closet. It's 30x30 inches, so I'll need to have a large format scan done. This is a photo taken on my iPhone, so it's a tad blurry. I'll replace this with the scan.

Description (in progress): Before the internet connected all humans around the globe; before humans thrived around the world; before dinosaurs or any animals walked on Earth; before creatures swam in the sea; before coral reefs, trees, or fields of grass graced our planet... Primordial Soup.

Julie I personally use flickr to share photos here on the forum that are not uploaded.

Melissa thanks so much

Julia love the color palette you used. warm and with the orange/reds and green complimentary makes it pop.

an Update on Tea&Perwinkle....
For so many years realism used to be my top priority.......and in doing so I lost something, I lost the passion...Something was missing......I was missing!...I was nowhere to be seen in my work...! I wasn't drawing from within.

Creating something original, visually appealing...telling a story, evoking a feeling, connecting with an audience.... is what I strive for now....I'm still discovering myself and my art and I do believe I will continue to my entire lifetime....Pop Surrealism is a wonderful thing I have fallen for.....I hope to continue to push myself, evolve a style, discover my niche and make my mark, my artistic footprint.

Abbie I started this new work in progress thread since Diane hadn't been on the other one for so long and it was quite old. I hope its okay that I started a new one but if not just let men know and I will close this thread. Thanks

Everyone's work looks great!

How do you post images that AREN'T currently in your gallery into posts here? Anyone know?

Melissa Herrin

JL I upload my photos to photobucket and copy the html link and post it here.

Julia I absolutely love your style. Its the swirls and other designs in your work that make you so unique. Your art is the kind that I can take a picture inside your picture and discover a whole new piece.

Julia Hamilton

Julie and JL, If you don't mind showing a small image (like my post above), you can upload the image to a password-protected gallery. You'll want to create the password-protected gallery before you upload the image. When you upload the image, check the box for the password-protected gallery. The image won't be visible to anyone but you.

Thanks, Sheena. This one has a warmer pallet than most of my work. I wanted it to seem very alive and organic. I appreciate your feedback. I like the direction you're going with your artwork. You have an interesting blend of old and new. It feels very emotional and personal.

Melissa, I'm pleased to hear that you enjoy exploring my artwork. Thanks for taking time to comment on my latest piece. Eggs for Breakfast is looking good! I love the warm tones.

Loretta, You have a really good eye for color and composition. Your new pieces are coming along nicely. I'm surprised at how much you finished in one session! You're smart to capture your progress along the way. I should do more of that with my work. I set up a time lapsed camera (iPhone app called LapseIt) while working on Awakening, but the lighting wasn't great, so it's not as much fun to watch as I had hoped.

Otil, Your panels are beautiful! I love the intricate patterns and soft colors. At 5 feet tall, they must be breathtaking in person. They're as tall as I am!

Thanks Julia, I did as you said and it is a good idea also. I created the private gallery for future commissioned pieces I am working on so the customers can keep tabs on the progress as they are always excited to see how it is transforming. I am going to use the private gallery to also post pictures/ideas for them to check out before we finalize the piece I am going to work on. Anyway...here is the piece I was going to share but couldn't figure out how to do so, it is now done but I did have a picture of it while it was in progress I sent to the customer so thought I would share it. It is a watercolor, pencil & pen piece and I had just finished the background wash and was working on the detail of the tiger & cub.

She's DONE!....Happy Dance......Really enjoying this Tea Series of Mine. (My oldest daughter Brooklynn Jade is the little girl in this drawing)
Hoping to take my art to the next level in 2015. I am starting to evolve and continue to push myself. I'm enjoying My Tea Series and will continue to add to it, as well as much more NEW work to come. I've combined my love of drawing with Pastels and colored Pencil with my crafty side by embellishing this drawing with pearls and feathers. Sheena Pike Art

Beautiful and very fun pieces you do Sheena! They are absolutely amazing!

I started my next commissioned piece last night, it is a rough..and I mean very rough..sketch of what I will be doing. There will be many changes before I start putting it on the watercolor paper and doing the final composition. The customer was very specific about what he wanted, 3 chickadees on holly branches in snow. I will enjoy this one very much as I love birds and have wanted to do a painting with chickadees in a winter scene! It's great when a commissioned piece works out to be one you want :)

I have started doing my rough sketches on a piece of paper cut to the actual size the painting is going to be but put the 1/2 inch border around it to keep in mind the actual visible area when put in a standard frame that is available in most stores. I remember when I first started and discovered the difference between the actual size and the viewable size. It was a huge disappointment when the drawings were cut off when put in the frames.

I know the drill Sheena...it was many years ago...prepping for that first show...very exciting ...wishing you every success + + +

Also created my displays... except the larger slat walls my carpenter friend built especially for me so I could break them down & transport in my compact car.

For indoor shows -- always made sure I had plenty of lights/clamp lamps.

Sold out my first show -- distinct incentive to carry on ;)

Having lots of smaller impulse items is brilliant -- they'll get snapped up & afford those with limited means pride in saying they have one of your pieces :)

Thanks for your appreciation of my process, Sheena.

Enjoyed viewing your pieces Lesley -- innovative.

Yeah I really have no idea what I am doing so it will be a learning experience my first time........trying to have small items to "pretty" up the table....in the end the Prints are what I want to sell but the kids may see the candy and stickers and magnets and little things and find their way over to my table ....then mom will follow ....Ugh! that sounds horrible like I am taking advantage of children......Sheesh! Sheena! Anyways.......Business is Business.....

"part of my video for a group exhibition in Quebec this summer. " ---- AWESOME ! .....good luck with that! Very fun to see your style and technique here on the thread @Carmen

I'll post the details of the exhibition as it nears -- thanks Sheena.

I'm honoured to be exhibiting with the artists in this group -- we are 4...more, later.

In essence -- prepping for this show is another form of WIP.

As far as I know, shopkeepers have been doing the candy thing for a long time. I don't know about fairs because of the tripping hazard (or how sanitary it is), but stores also put out bowls of water for the dogs because it gives the owners time to appreciate their surroundings.

Wow, Carmen. That is beautiful texturing!

Void Carmen Hathaway

I get the candy mode Vanessa -- I kept a basket of candy canes on the counter at my public studio during the holiday season, and on the window garland-- kids especially were thrilled when I said to help themselves to the garland candies.

I'd like Sheena's story about her 'Rainbow 'seeds' -- love that idea. Seeding rainbows... beautiful.

Thanks for your kudos re texturing -- that was early stages -- has improved substantially.

I bet those kids loved the garlands too. Picturing sugar highs, though…never a best situation in an art space :D

Oooh…nice new avatar! And wow…someday hope to understand texturing that throughly. Beautiful. Are you using a natural texture for the bump at all or is that entirely procedural?

This is so early (especially the mice). I'm experimenting with lighting complex enough that working from a model seemed prudent. The typewriter is courtesy of Video Copilot and the lamp was grabbed from Turbosquid. Mostly just a still life reference for the final product.

Oil on canvas. This is smaller than I'm used to, as it will sit in the stables reception area and there is not as much room there for larger canvases.

This is one of the young riders ready for her dressage event at the last show in Warwick,

Hope to finish it this afternoon, work load permitting

David, I must admit, you have an amazing amount of nerve. That is not your painting. That is George Seurat's "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Sunday_Afternoon_on_the_Island_of_La_Grande_Jatte As if you didn't know. How can you hope to be taken seriously here when you do stuff like that?

Anyway:
