We finally got this young ram's attention by whistling; so, he stopped, turned slightly toward us and stood very quiet and still for a few minutes. He and his companions never got really concerned about our presence but did begin to move slowly along the sandstone shelf. This bighorn ram's horns indicate his age because older more mature rams have impressive, curling horns which can measure more than three feet long and one foot around at the base. Their horns which begin to develop soon after birth, continue to grow throughout their lives and are used as tools to open cactus to eat and for fighting.
