Description
My mother and Mother Nature created this gorgeous bouquet of beautiful yellow flowers which posed for this flower image. The brilliant yellows, oranges, reds, and maroons created by the sunlight in the highlighted and shadowed areas of the bloom provided a startling subject. And, these amazing sunflowers are as interesting as they are beautiful!
Sunflower blooms, with their stunning bright yellow ray florets around the outside and yellow and/or maroon disc florets inside, stop tilting toward the sun once they become mature. Then they "always" face east. During growth the young flower heads tilt during the day to face the sun (Wikipedia.org). A new study published in the journal Science (8/9/16) explains that sunflowers use both circadian rhythms and heliotropism (bending and turning toward the light) (ibtimes.com). Stacy Harmer, a biology professor at the University of California, said, "At nighttime, you could see the whole plant rearranging itself". And, the article goes on to explain that on shorter summer nights it can take them eight hours to turn back to their east-facing morning position; whereas, longer autumn nights can take twelve hours (ibtimes.com). SIMPLY AMAZING!!!
