Description
These magnificent mule deer bucks, with the evening setting sun glowing on their velvet covered antlers, were grazing together in a hay field adjacent to our property. In the spring and summer their antlers are entirely covered with this soft material which provides food and protection during growth. The velvet dries up when the matured antlers harden and is usually gone by the first of October. It is a rare occurrence for a group of these larger bucks to slowly graze the length of the field allowing this type of photo opportunity. The river bottom between Paonia and Hotchkiss, Colorado is the year round home to many species of wildlife because it provides abundant food and shelter.
