Description
Point of Rocks, Maryland is a small community on the northern bank of the Potomac River in western Maryland, about 28 miles from Harper's Ferry. It is also the site of this wonderful old railway station from the 19th century.
Designed by noted architect E. Francis Baldwin in the Gothic Revival style popular during the 1860's and 70's, it is just one of many stations he built in the region for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. He used red brick and locally quarried sandstone for the structure which was built in 1876. The station was placed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It is currently owned by CSX Corporation who use it for offices with no public access. It is also shamefully deteriorated under the corporate stewardship. Point of Rocks is now served by MARC, Maryland Area Regional Commuter train service.
My reason for being at Point of Rocks was a search for, you guessed it, rocks. I am an avid rockhound and had found few localities during my explorations of the area. So I figured a place named Point of Rocks would be my best opportunity. The town is aptly named for a prominent exposure of massive limestone looming over the river below. Massive enough that my meager rock hammer wasn't going to expose any rocks worth adding to my garden collection.
What I found instead was this charming station, beautifully illuminated in warm late afternoon light in a location that is simply chock full of history. And it turns out to be one of the most photographed rural railroad stations in America. I completely understand why.

Can't help but admire your persistence. Point of Rocks Station, is charming, and what a grand story about this Historic Place, though deteriorated, and still beautiful and unique. A beautiful capture of 'history', Douglas. A stroke of luck to fulfill your joy of the Station, instead of finding rocks for your collection:: 'another day', perhaps. Compliments, kudos!!........fav...........VIVA
