Description
The Baroque south facade of the ornate Kurfurstliches Palais (English: Electoral Palace), a mid-16th Century construction in Trier, Germany. It is so over-the-top Baroque that it might even be the leading edge of Rococo architectural style.
The Kurfurstliches Palais was the former residence of the Archbishops and Electors of Trier from the 16th-18th centuries. The building was originally part of the Ancient Imperial Palace that was used by Constantine the Great in around 310 CE. The palace is still attached to the Basilica of Constantine which also dates to 310. When construction of the Kurfurstliches Palais began, the old Roman Palace was to be destroyed, but its walls were so improbably stout and strong that they were finally incorporated into the construction of the palace. Today the palace houses various offices of the federal government and occasionally held classical music concerts.
The Roman Monuments, Cathedral of St Peter and Church of Our Lady in Trier are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
