Description
An example of the classic, red sandstone architecture to be found in Glasgow, Scotland is the Baltic Chambers building near Glasgow Central Station. Built in 1899, the master masons of that classic era of Glasgow construction utilized red Dumfries Sandstone and adorned the structure with stylish ornamentation common to the architecture of the late-Victorian period.
It was a suitably grey and damp day when I gazed at this building and saw the name enshrined on its facade. I was immediately reminded of the spy novels by British-Irish author John Le Carré featuring the endeavours of taciturn, aging spymaster George Smiley. It would not have surprised me in the slightest to have seen Sir Alec Guinness reprising his role as the British senior spook emerge from its doors to melt into the throngs of this busy city.
