So they wait the 24 hours then bombard the site with a massive spam hit. They then get deleted, banned, and eventually come back again as someone else and do it again. Admin and the mods would spend their entire time chasing/deleting spammers, and not be able to tend to the regulars on the site.

I woke up very early and saw the pages too.

If there is a way to combat this, I'd give all newcomers one new post for three days. It would be easier to flag and purge the spammers. Or have it programmed to when an account is deleted, everything connected to that account is also purged, including forum posts. It will save the moderators from the cumbersome job of deleting one post at a time.

I feel for the moderators. I'm sure you were cussing by the 20th page, JC. I know I would be.

Wouldn't most spammer's time on the net be limited before their ip is banned? They would be more interested in immediate posting privileges.

Nevermind...there it all is. What a pile of #*$# to deal with.

This appears to be more sinister than spam. So many posts in such a short period of time with no discernible content makes me wonder if this is some kind of an attack by a disgruntled former member.

And yet because we get an average of one question a month from a collector account the very simple solution of only allowing artists with art to post will go by the wayside yet again.

I propose we have two paralell forums one for artists and one for both artists and collectors, except in the second only collectors can start a thread to reduce the temptaion that some artists feel to start a thread on a daily basis about their newest work.

:) That sure would make it hard for those that like the back and forth arguments, uh I mean discussions, to get their point across....multiple times :) . Maybe they would spend more time golfing, fishing, painting, taking photos, etc, or whatever their interests are outside of here, instead of trying to continually convince others of their views on every subject that comes to light.

Spammers have been in the blog posts, too.

I think it's the same person using different, new accounts every time they're banned. Perhaps we should name them the "Chameleon".

i'd say its the work of both the joker and the penguin. the riddler would leave hints we can read, and create a user account that would be a part of the puzzle. the others would just drop spam in with a large penguin shaped helicopter right over the entire city. each one with the styling of the joker...

Hello JC, you are doing a great job.....we could sign a petition and see if we could get you a raise!!!!!!!! Did this occur while Abbie was sleeping? I do have a question, I have noticed this occurring a bit more frequently. As members should we be concerned about the spammer snatching out images. Someone did mention the spammer or spammers or also invading out blogs?

I am sure some of you remember the hacker who attacked FAA and thanks to JC and Abbie alerted us all via emails and in the form, fortunately for myself and others were able to remove any link in the bio I also reported there was a hacker a former member and had a web address attacking FAA and Sean. When I did a reverse IP address it was located out of OHIO

Why is there a surge now and occurring? Could the answer lie cell phones from other sources globally? Great job JC We all as members and yes non-paying members have stake and claims in this website to limit the amount of discussions would certainly put quite a few members in a tissy, lol, lol, lol who seemed to use the discussion 24/7

Disgruntled loser with nothing else going on in his life is my guess. Slightly disrupting I suppose but at least it gives him something to do beyond shooting up a public place and actually hurting someone.

I see a new feature being coded for stopping this kind of speed spamming by Sean in the coming months. Something that stops after so many random posts of spam.

I was here overnight, watching this unfold over hours and hours. On the one hand, I wondered how dangerous it might be for my system to even have the site open.

On the other hand, like the aftermath of a spectacular train wreck, i couldn't look away. :-/

The latest one I clicked on the persons name and it came up as AnDee Design as the person?? How are they doing that? How are they posting as other peoples accounts?

..and now it went to Abbies account?

What's funny, is that they're posting, but not showing up in the Who's On Line page. They seem to be talented asshole trolls if anything.

And they're at it again! Think something needs to be implemented pretty quick, cuz I don't think they'll be giving up soon.... :(

Well, I guess it is now business hours in California, so I hope the coders at FAA are busy working on this.

Wendy mentioned she was up late, I am normally but then started to see the effects and signed off. I was downstairs in the lobby of the apartment complex were I live. I no longer have wifi in my apartment go downstairs, and when it started occurring I first thought it was interference at the 4 story city block apartment living complex, I shut it down and went upstairs and signed on my android and noticed it occurring and called it a night. It is very disruptive.

JC, I just remembered something I had seen in the forum discussion and Julie just mentioned she clicked on the link. Perhaps no one should be clicking on the link of the imposter. Maybe a warning should be sent out to all members alerting "DO NOT CLICK ON LINK OUT OF COURIOSITY" in a discussion forum!!!! Whatever it is, its replicating itself.... This is getting annoying?

Looks as though all the spamming has been deleted, at least on the first page. Hopefully, we'll get an explanation from management about it.

Because management knows why someone would spend their time to do this.

Maybe a statement as if it was a virus, etc, etc.

It was crazy here this morning! Each time I refreshed the forum more spam every second!

Looking at page 2 half-way down, and all the way through page 20, it's still covered in spam, so I guess they're still working on deleting those posts, posted by different-named spammers.

Not a virus.

It is called a denial of services attack. They are designed to disrupt normal operations, in this case the forum. Basically, some disgruntled forum goer with nothing better to do wants to disrupt the discussions.

I thought a denial of service attack was just massive hits on the site. Posting to the forum requires work - creating an account, posting a message.

Somehow it seems to be working for me. I managed to get a few sales in so it doesn't seem to be effecting buyers.

Weird how they don't show-up in the Who's Online page. I guess all the strange names they used are masked somehow.

I'm glad to hear our images are safe, JC. But do you really think it was a disgruntled forum goer since they were describing their website each time and attacking more than one site? And the denial appeared to be only for some accounts…if'n you know what I mean.

Google must be moving us up in the search based on increased activity. lol.

I saw on a security site that you can buy a DoS attack for $50.

Robo-spamming a forum seems like it requires some level of understanding of coding, and carrying this a step further, some level of understanding of faa's forum page source codes. Did we let a programmer go recently? Is this an inside job? Just thinking out loud. -W

ps, adding my suggestion along with those already given here, we need a CAPTCHA function for creating new threads.

Conceptually the same.

In this case the forum is a soft target so to speak. Make up an email and name, post, paste and see how many you can get in before that name is banned. Rinse and repeat.

Safeguards against that are also pretty easy and will be in place soon.

JC, I just discovered something I think Julie had mentioned she clicked on one of the names it showed as Andee, besides myself and Greg I happened to make a post Andee discussion form and there is a spamer in his discussion form ChiBu Chi you might go take a look....that may be the spammer, its still up......myself, Andee, and Greg were all in that discussion then came over here to your discussion.

They were listing all the types of opie to be had. There's an internet law describing how there is an alternative version for everything in existence. And I'm not about to go into detail about that. Yuck.

Michael when someone with no avatar shows up many times it takes on the member above or below it when clicked one. This happens all the time.
