Tired Of Spammers

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm getting fed up with the spammers that take over the forum on what seems to be a weekly basis now. Abbie, I'm sure you've had your fill of them seeing that you have to spend valuable time deleting all their posts.

I found this list of suggestions on how to cut down, and hopefully stop this activity.

I especially like #8. If they can't post a link, there's no need to post.

https://blog.vanillaforums.com/help/9-ways-to-eliminate-spam-in-your-community-forum/

EDIT: is it possible for the FAA servers to catch a virus if someone clicks on the links in the spam posts, or will that just infect the individuals computer?

There are quite a few...

It's simple. Don't allow anyone to post anything in any threads at all unless they go premium first. That would cut out the most spammers right away.

I did a little digging on Google to see what website the spammer was posting. It's a porn site..no surprise there. When I searched on the google images, it shows just a few nasty pics, but the majority are FAA artists avatars as well as their products. Sharon Mau, Bill Cannon...front and center. This is NOT something I want my art nor my face associated with!!

Tonight's massive spam blitz looks exactly like one that happened yesterday on another forum I belong to. Looks like an automated spammer run amok.

Except new people often have a lot of questions. A limit on starting threads for the first day or week might help.

The new people don't have to post links, Adam!

My goodness, what is it with the forum ?????

New people who pay... won't be doing this kind of thing.

I agree with Glenn .. it should be paying member only that can post threads.

non paying member .. no thread postings!

Agree Glenn, the problem is people who have the basic accounts, and the collectors and galleries.

Maybe having a CAPTCHA when first entering the forum or logging into your account will help.

Sean will never go for only paying members in the forum. Buyers have questions, as do free account artists.

The forum is a important source, to recruit new premium members. How often you have threads where people ask about the benefits of the premium account, and after the many answers, join the club?

Unfortunately, popular forums like this, will alwys be targeted by spammers.

Questions for prospective new account members and purchasers could be in a separate area altogether. Many POD sites have opportunities for questions to be answered through a dedicated area.

Today we have this particular Bozo spamming here. The Blog area is regularly hit with spammers. And many of us were solicited through commentary on one of our images or through e-mail today. All were accomplished by simply working the new account system with a bogus name and no accountability.
They get shut down and through the miracle of free accounts get right back in and start right over the next day.

They just tinker with the system and people involved. This is the only POD site that I can remember getting spammers coming at me...

This can be addressed if it is a priority and if the will to do so is there.

With all due respect, I would never assume to know what Sean will or will not do Sharon.

Glenn, perhaps I worded it wrong...I've seen JC reply on other threads that Sean would never keep buyers and galleries from posting on the forum.
