I postulate that all traditional artists are self-obsessed whereas photographers who use a viewfinder (or even LCD screen) are forced by the nature of their ART to see the world through a more structured perspective that encourages them a wider perspective on society as a whole
I don't believe I've really seen something unless I've sketched it or painted it from life. I've taken plenty of photos without really seeing anything.
You must be a nightmare when driving then, David! But seriously, when photography found me (to use the sort or mumbo-jumbo usually associated with this type of thread) I also discovered that I look (an indeed listen) at my surroundings much more intently that I did before.
Yes, because by Richard's standard, you remove yourself from the surrounding reality by only looking through the frame, thus elevating you as an arteeest.
Yes, prisms, viewfinders, ruby glass, etc. But you are still choosing what to frame, right, Richard? It plays into the theory of why eyewitness accounts can be unreliable.
And yes, I agree. Photogs are artists. That other thread's closed.
I simply must have the latest camera. I must have the latest macro lens and telephoto lens to go with it. I must have the latest software so that I can produce the best possible renditions on the latest computer. I must have a super-duper, high-speed, large-format, color printer to run off copies of my images. I must create a sparkling website to display MY photographic creations.
