I've put a link in the Header in "Custom 1" several times and later the link disappears from the header even though it still appears in the form/field for it. ? Help anybody?

Did you try "custom 2"? Also, be sure the header color is set to transparent. I had issues as well but finally got it after about 4 or 5 tries.

I can change both.
I think changes are being implemented to the AW admin controls and options through March, so don't fret if things are weird right now. If it persists for you, it might be worth sending a message to tech support.

Resize your browser window, and you're going to see all sorts of stuff start disappearing are the window shrinks in size.
That's by design.
As the window gets smaller (or as the device gets smaller... e.g. iPhones, iPads, etc.), the layout of the website changes in order to compensate.

Holly, you can find press releases under info on your AW and you can make the search bar field transparent so your header shows through

I've been doing some fiddling around. Thanks so much everybody! You've been a lot of help and have inspired me.
Here's what I found so far today. Custom 1 and Custom 2 still exist. But, you don't see custom 1 when not logged in to your AW and using a browser on a PC. You don't see either one on a Safari browser on an IPhone when not logged in. I have not tried the FAA App to see it. Right now, I want to discuss what the AW payfor looks like on a browser on a PC or a laptop.
My url is http://www.holly-Carmichael.artistwebsites.com
Custom 1 is a field you can fill out that is supposed to show up between your logo and the search bar in the header on the left side.
Custom 2 is a field you can fill out that is supposed to show up between the search bar and the cart on the right side.
Custom 1 does not disappear and reappear if you are not logged in and if you resize the browser. This is only happening when you are logged in.
I can always see custom 2 using my browser logged in or not on my pc.
The transparent setting did not affect the issue, but thanks for the heads up, that gave some ideas for other things :)
Thank you ... so glad to find press and blogs. I made links to those using custom 2 and that works beautifully for now. It's custom 1 that doesn't work right, imho.
What can I do to get it fixed?
??

Thank you Jessica... there are certainly some quirky things going on, and I have fixed all I can for now...

The background image I uploaded is not showing up in the header anymore, although it shows when I "view" background image.
I don't understand, Louise, how do you make the background in the header transparent? and does that affect if you have an image uploaded?
Also, please, is there any code you can put in the Logo text box in the header that will make nothing appear. As it is you must put something in even if it is one letter.
Holly, your AW looks great.

My custom 1 disappears in Firefox when I open my bookmarks sidebar, and reappears when I close it. This is consistent with what Sean wrote above.

I think I figured out a way to have nothing in the Logo Type: Text > Text box in the header. Just change the font size to 0pt and it accepts it as nothing. Also the header image is showing again. Maybe I just need a restart.

Thanks Jessica, I was wondering. smh, thought I was might be missing some fontabulous feature. Couldn't see-through to find it though. Clearly it is not there.

Hi Jessica, Anita and James!
Now that I had more time to play with browsers and logging in and out to see the differences on three different devices, my PC, IPad, and IPhone, I have learned why these quirky things exist. (I still have not used the FAA App.) What I discovered about the programming for the header is that it has to collapse to be able to be doable across different devices. Clearly whoever wrote it was thinking about making sure our websites would look great on as many devices in as many different softwares as humanly possible. It's actually very sophisticated.
So, as you watch while enlarging and reducing the window, custom 1 is the first to go the smaller the browser or device you get and eventually custom 2 and the search bar disappear too ... but never the whole logo, the magnifying glass or the cart. What could use tweaking is the size of the search bar and it's placement. The header design is a similar template to what FAA uses in its header, but their search bar is clearly not as long.
My name, Holly Carmichael was originally the only thing in the "Logo" section (I didn't have "Art") for example, but at the default font size my name was cut off if the browser was reduced of size even by a smidge. So, at first I reduced the size of it hoping to correct the issue. NOT. That was what started me finding out about the custom 1 and search bar issues.
I was using IE and instead of resizing the browser window with the icon, I was stretching it to fit my computer screen. This way, custom 1 stays hidden. When I use the icon to enlarge the window to fit my screen it reappears. So, you were right resizing the browser is the actual issue vs. the sizes of the fields and the order in which they "collapse" as you reduce the size left to right on different devices.
Folks who use custom 1 need to put information in there that is not critical to their portfolio, but should consider that the space is there in some scenarios when visitors surf by... so they can take advantage with something if they want to. I used a link to FAQ and another to the Guarantee. That info is found elsewhere so, I felt it not so critical, but nice to have.
I am going to play with trying to make the search bar invisible. But I suspect the field will still be there and will make a difference in some enlarging and reducing scenarios. I kind of like the search bar, I just think it's too big and shouldn't be in the middle. People like to look for the art by way of titles and themes and so forth so I think it's a handy tool. I've used it to find paintings I need to edit etc.
I had trouble understanding how to get my image into the background at first. After several tries, I discovered you must do this with your browser window all the way enlarge so you can see the entire set of buttons in the pop up windows. May I suggest you upload the image again, and the follow each step to make the software accept it. You have several steps in the process before you hit the last button.
Lastly, I didn't like the default settings in the footer... so, I changed the colors and the sizes of the fonts to make it more easily readable and noticeable.... key word noticeable.
Thanks again for all your input, it was very, very helpful!
I love your work folks :)

Thanks for all the info, Holly! Especially about custom 1. I have an important link there so maybe I should put it on custom 2 instead. You header is beautiful!!

You can also remove the border between the galleries and the sidebar text.

"What Loise (sic) meant to say is that the search box can be made transparent!"
No, the header. Click on "header" to edit, go to the color wheel and click "transparent" under it. Then I placed my own header in.

So much still to discover there. Thanks for all the info, Holly, Jessica. Louise, what happens if you place your own header image in, and don't make it transparent, doesn't the header just cover up the background color you choose? or is there a conflict then?
I don't trust anything I see on my computer, because if I don't do a restart every two hours, weird things start to happen.
Mine didn't show up so I think it ended up behind the header color. What I ended up doing so that colors were consistent throughout is to make my header design transparent (as a PNG) and then place it in with the header color set to #333333, which is a dark neutral gray. If I change that to transparent, it appears white.

Louise Your Aw is nowhere to be found! I can only see the shopping cart. Instead of making the header transparent you can just delete it. Maybe that's why your header didn't show up.

I see your website, Louise, it's amazing. Is that the FAA AW or your own? if you did that with the AW tools, kudos.
if you click links you will get her FAA shopping cart, Jessica.

Which site? lol
reevesphotographics. com is my own. http://louise-reeves.artistwebsites.com/ is thru FAA

Don't know why you can't see it, Jessica. It comes up just fine, even when I am not logged into FAA.

Thanks James and All,
I think I've got it the way I want it for now considering the things I must accept I can not change >grin<

Louise, they both look nice, I like the continuity of theme. When you click for AW on your FAA profile page, it takes you to your .com, I am sure you now this, but how do people get to your AW? (maybe that is what Jessica means?) through your links? Is that what you use on social media, your AW or your .com?
about how many people here link to their own domain vs. AW's on their profile page, and how many people have them as the same thing? What's the benefit? I am just wondering if it is worth the time and work for me.
Louise, I meant that your AW site isn't linked to your FAA under: visit website. You personal website is linked and I could only see your shopping cart.
Anita my FAA link goes to my own domain but once there you can click to my AW
9 Years Ago
My FAA site is on my business cards. While I don't really maintain my own site lately, my lazy line of thinking is that the viewer is already on my page, which, except for the customizing, is identical to the artistwebsite. Linking the 2 would be redundant, IMO.
I too only link to my personal website on AW because it is redundant to link to the entry on FAA which btw has some menu links for members but not necessarily pertinent for clients.
I also wish the option to sign in was more clearly marked so surfers and clients don't try it. But instead see where they should do it as visitors. It made several of mine mad and it is a frequent excuse why very few outsiders make comments on my work.
yes, I guess it is kind of redundant.
I didn't realize the sign in showed to visitors. what happens when they click on it? do they get an invite to become a member?
It won't let them sign in because it says administrator but a lot of them have overlooked it and they keep trying to sign in anyway and get frustrated because they cannot. It is not a simple process just for the simple client to login and look at your work and make comments :-(
