Cold is relative depending on where you live. I don't think anyone south of Kentucky know what cold is but compared to Florida, Kentucky is a frozen wasteland!
Our low tonight is supposed to get to -10 (without wind-chill).
To put it another way...
If I went outside and picked up a rock and brought it into my house and put it in my freezer it would warm UP!
Who else is living where it is colder than a freezer?

It was -10 here in Minneapolis last night, still -6 when I got up this morning. Not a big deal here. So far this year, I think we have yet to crack -20. That's when it gets interesting.

It got COLD here just last week. I think it actually went to 29.
On the flip side it was 71 Monday

Well the average temperature of your refrigerator is 45. We should all move into our refrigerators in the winter - lol.
The energy waste has always bugged me. But not a lot of incentive to build systems that utilize free fuel or in this case cold.

After sleeping in a tin box in the snow in the Mono Basin when it was 4 degrees, yes, I'd have to say I do know cold.

I took a canvas tote bag outside. Filled it with firewood, brought it inside and left in the mud room. Went back the next day and pulled out a piece and it still had ice and snow on it.

I lived in WI for a while. It gets cold there.
That said, Kansas City felt colder with the constant wind and a month where it never made double digits.
I LIKE the Florida Panhandle.

I don't know how you guys do it. If I have to put on socks and can't wear flip-flops it's too cold for me. The last time I lived in a cold climate was 45 years ago and I have no memory of it. I am eternally grateful to my dad for moving us from Philadelphia to Florida in 1970.

Quebec City forecast -19 far. tonight.......which sounds less cold than our -30 celsius..... Same differenc, as they say!

Oh my goodness, Alfred. That doesn't even sound real to me. lol I have absolutely no frame of reference for that kind of cold.

I'm in the Michigan too, John. I share your chill tonight. This is what I call "snot freezing weather".
That said, it's still not as bad as it was last year (shhh, I didn't say that out loud).
Of course, those who live in Minnesota and parts of Canada think this is balmy......

I guess yu can't complain about the cold unless you are standing on the north pole Mary!

Well, I'm inside my nice warm house, and I'm working at home tomorrow, so I'm happy. Oh, yeah, I do have to go to the bank.....I'll wait until it gets up in the teens...
I drove around for an hour Saturday looking for something to photograph and I couldn't figure out why my feet, with two pairs of socks and thick boots, were still freezing. Turns out the heat is not working on the driver's side in my car. The vents on that side are blowing cold air. Taking it in Thursday.....NOT driving long distance in a refrigerated car.

We're having a heat wave from temps of last week. Right now it's 25, feels like 16. Icy roads coming home from work. Thankful to be home!
Looking forward to trying the frozen bubble shots when the temp drops! Thanks for the idea :)

Here in Columbus, OH, it's 3 this morning. Our heat went out last night, so I slept under a pile of blankets, wearing multiple layers, and with the blanket pulled over my head. Can't wait for the repair guy to get here!
I posted a link to this article last week. In case anyone missed it, I've included the link again here. I love looking at these images when I think I'm really cold. This article contains amazing photography of a town in Russia (Oymyakon) where winter temperatures average minus 50 C (minus 58 F). Brrrrrrrrr!

It is 39 degrees here and for where I live in Italy that is cold. I have an illness that is exacerbated by cold so this suits me just fine and is one of the reasons we live here.
Reading this thread I was chuckling - in parts it reads like the 'comparing the scars' scene from Jaws. It also reminded me of an old Monty Python Sketch that I have posted here:

It was 35 degrees for the high here one day last week in South Carolina and the news was all about how cold it was. I guess we really don't know cold. I was up for a job in Wisconsin a few years ago and I'm prety sure my wife and kids were praying I would not get it. Here, all the apartment complexes advertise their outdoor pools. There they all advertise the indoor garages!

Global warming has nothing to do with weather in the USA it has to do with melting ice at the caps... Fox News strikes another innocent victim

Every time we have a cold snap in the Carolinas, I can tell you which of my Facebook friends are going to sy "So much for global warming." A lot of them love to listen to Rush and I don't mean the Canadian rockers.

I was born and raised in Southern California so the colder clime of North Carolina (It went down to 9 here last week) is especially brutal for me (relatively speaking).

LOL, John...that would be where I live! When I was a kid in the '70s, it snowed once in St Petersburg, FL. The cars all had a light dusting, and it melted as soon as it hit the ground. They let us out of school for the afternoon. lol If it had been a whole inch I am sure they would have given us the whole day off!

"I want to live somewhere where an inch of snow is a disaster!"
Welcome to my part of Kentucky, John! 😁. Don't know if it would be considered a disaster, but normally an inch of snow here, if it sticks to the roads, shuts the schools down.
An inch of snow here hardly gets noticed!
Greg, wasn't it your area last year where people were trapped on the roads for hours because of snow?
I see these places shut down for an inch of snow and think "what's the problem?". But I can tell you that, even though I could drive in it, I would NOT go out on the road in those places because the other drivers would scare me to death. There are enough idiots here, where they should know how to drive in it, but don't. They don't seem to understand it's not about how fast you can go, it's about how fast you can STOP!
Anyone see the 193 car pile up near Battle Creek Michigan? Not too far from where I live.
Valerie and Greg, our kids don't even get recess canceled for that! The schools make them go outside and play.
John,
No trapped vehicles here, but could have been elsewhere, maybe the other side of the state.
"...I see these places shut down for an inch of snow and think "what's the problem?"..."
The main problem here is due to all of the back county roads the school buses have to travel. They're asphalt roads, but the city/county doesn't have the equipment to clear them, so school gets cancelled. One year we had 18" of snow, and school was out for two weeks. If the neighbor that used to live closeby us wouldn't have done our driveways with his small tractor and blade on the front, we would have never got out of here until it melted possibly. Living in the county has it's advantages, but it also has some [slight] disadvantages.

Well, reading some of these posts, I'm feeling downright sun drenched right now at 5 degrees F. Well, not really - I have been trying to diet and I love salads, but in this weather today, I just can't do a cold lunch. Making myself some soup right now. The hotter the better....especially after reading Shena's post.

Supposed to be 50-51 degrees here Saturday, then drop down back into the norm for here this time of year which is around the 40's or so. I've had my fill of the arctic/polar cold fronts.

I wish the temperatures in Canada were in the sub zero area all year long.
I have been playing golf with the same five or six snow birds from Canada for a number of years now. Man, they are easy pickin's! I think Mike Weir is the only guy in Canada that knows how to play golf!
They make a big deal out of paying me in Canadian money. I tell them that's fine, I just give it to my grandkids to play Monopoly with anyway. One time I paid them in Mexican peso. One guy looked at me said, hey no problem, I have a time share in Mexico too! lol
Great people. We have a ball. Some of the nicest people I have ever met on a golf course or anywhere for that matter!
EDIT: For the record, ya I know cold. I was born in Northern Wisconsin. That is way I live in California.

I did a family photo session a couple weeks ago and some of their family members was in from Southern Alaska. They said we (Missouri) was colder. I don't recall the high that day but it was in the teens(F) with windchill around 0 F. Due to our humidity and wind (like JC mentioned about KC) they said it feels colder in Missouri than Southern Alaska. We've been in the teens the last few week, however it's warmer today with high in mid 30's.
I would love to live in Florida. If it gets below 80, I'm cold. :-P

I knew cold. I moved away from cold. I visit cold on occasion. We don't agree on much and have grown apart.

LOL Karyn!
Still reading this thread and counting my blessings as a Floridian more than ever. It's 68 here and I am wearing a jacket. You northern folks amaze and impress me with your fortitude. Either that or I have to question your sanity to stay there. lol

Well, they cancelled school this morning, even before the snow got here. Forecast was for 1/2". We've received that it appears, and it's still coming down. Roads are still clear, but probably some slick spots. Oh, it's about 27 degrees.

Valerie - I question our sanity too. Must be frozen brain cells - like our pipes. .
Greg - that is so funny. A half an inch " is sooo cuuute.." We call that air.

It's been ridiculous here........one week -30s this week....-7 ......a few days ago I was taking my oldest to school and it was RAINING.......Pouring rain.......then would freeze to the windshield as it fell icing up my truck. This morning is foggy .........because of all the moisture .......it will probably drop down to -30s again and then I will be worried about my grandmother slipping from all this rain ....it's melting and then it's freezing. Seriously!.........old man winter is being a douche.......make up your mind buddy! .......normally around here it gets like this in March not January.
