It Will Take Time -

I will be going through all of my digital abstract galleries and setting them to one price - for the largest possible print. In this gallery, http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/1-roy-erickson.html?tab=artworkgalleries&artworkgalleryid=373646 , the largest size is 40 X 40 with a few being 30 X 30. There will be those that want to know why I want to limit the possibilities - it's because my intention is for there to be just ONE print made of the image - as if I had painted them on canvas or board - there will be no duplicates made. My intention is to do this for a year - after that - we'll see - but it will continue if I continue.

can't you just change all the prices at once with bulk edit? people usually don't like being stuck with a limited size, not everyone has a huge wall.

Mike - life is a B - the idea is that there IS only one size - as if it were a real painting on canvas - you cannot sell it in multiple sizes - you just have that one you painted. Digital abstracts - like created on the computer are a file (I'm sure this isn't new to anyone) - and they could be printed multiple times at any size (that they will print at). I want to create these as "original" art - only one to a person. You can have one in your house - and no one will have even a copy of it on paper - unless I finally get my book of digital abstract art made.

PS: I did just that - I changed all of the prices in this gallery at one time. As I go from gallery to gallery - I'll check on sizes and bulk edit the price so that there will only be ONE size available for each image. as I said - this isn't going to be done overnight.

Good luck!

Thank you Abbie - I think this was my original intent anyhow - with my digital abstracts.

PS "sometimes it's neat to have a "split" personality. LOL

I like this idea, Roy...........adds a touch of exclusivity, and acknowledges the artist's original vision of the piece, size-wise, as with an original painting on canvas = one size !!

(are you disallowing cards, therefore? hope so. that will cut that chance of a buyer chopping up your image to their own taste, via that 'customizable' card order offered here - MY very own pet peeve, lol [harmeless opinion]....I do not 'allow' cards now)

Viv - no - I've never allowed my "art" to be chopped up into cards - my photo's do whatever - they are what they are

Huh! That is an interesting concept Roy.

May your future be littered with favor and prosperity. Best of wishes with your idea. I hope it works wonders.

Roy, back in the Jurassic Period, when I first started creating and selling digital -- I was doing something similar. I sold in Limited Editions of 2; one print for the buyer and one print reserved for me. (You know, for those future museum retrospectives!)

I'll be very interested in hearing how you progress with this; and wish you all the luck in the world with your new venture!

Now . . . you need a real-world show (don't forget the press releases) to further the cause. ;-)

I am very intrigued by this idea, Roy. I agree with Wendy that a real-world show is the logical next step with it. I hope it works out great for you...keep us all posted.

OK - I have spent several hours - three days - doing not much else that didn't 'have' to be done. I've been through all the 600+ images. At first, I was just going to have one size - but decided that I'd give the purchaser a choice of size - the idea is to create ONE image that goes out into the world alone - just as if it were a painting done on canvas - no subsequent prints to be made.

Thank you for all your good wishes. rd

Roy - I think it's a great idea. Are you doing it here on FAA?

James B Toy

Hmmm. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me to use a mass-market website to sell just one print. The buyer won't be able to prove it's one of a kind, since it won't come with any such documentation. One giclee print won't have any more value than ten or a hundred, but only one person will get to enjoy it.

I think this idea would work better in a gallery setting, where you have already printed the 'one'. I wish you luck but I would feel iffy on this working on a POD.

Roy Erickson

You are absolutely correct - it would work better in a gallery - I don't have one - nor the ability to create one - IF I had the ability to have them all printed - they would be off FAA - but I have enough of my stuff on the walls and under the bed now. I'm using FAA - because I have seen my work on metal and on canvas - I'm very pleased with the quality of work that FAA's printers gave me.

I have a couple of questions.

If someone does make a purchase, how will you prevent a second purchase? My guess would be that you would then remove the price option. But what happens if you don't get to it before a second purchase is made?

What if they want your autograph on the image?

Are you going to limit the print to metal and canvas? How will you do that if you do?

Are you going to send a Certificate of Authenticity? How can you do that if you don't know who bought the piece?

Like I said, I think it's a great idea, but I haven't figured a way to do it yet via FAA.

I was looking for a cushion to buy a relative (late Christmas) last night and looked for one of yours that I had been promising myself I would get as I adored it and know she would as it would look awesome on a cushion.

Firstly I saw the print prices and nearly dropped off my chair with fright and then you had no cushions for sale.

Sale lost :(

Mike Savad

i got cushions for sale, though we call them pillows in the US...

How is this strategy working out, Roy? How have sales been? Who do you see your market as here on FAA? I'm not sure you're offering the right products to the right markets.

Roy, you mention in the gallery that only one print will be made, but it doesn't say that when you click on the image. So, if a buyer finds you through searching, it looks like you offer that print at a high price without the explanation that it is an exclusive piece. FYI

Abbie Shores

Ok that explains the high prices. I didn't see anything about the reason, just took one look and realised I could not afford one

Adam Jewell

If there is a following anxiously awaiting new releases then this could work great but the buyers here probably have no idea who most of the artists are and will simply compare the look and price to whatever else is next to it in the search results.

When is the last time someone wanting a wall print thought to themselves "I want a ***insert artwork type*** from an artist I never heard of for which there is only one print and only available in one size that is available on a POD site"

If the artist has a brand and is known, then maybe, but otherwise it seems like quite a long shot.

Mike Savad

that's why i always offer the smallest sizes. you get a sticker shock. if your used to seeing lower prices, you may not even click to see that it starts at 24". you'll just move on.
