Great thread.Sorry my last "new" favorite Artist was Lucian Freud. I like Tracey Emin but I don't think she is a great artist.I'm way to traditional, all my friend's died before 1900.

Well Frans Widerberg maybe,I cant decide what I think about his work.

Great idea, Carolyn! I'm on my way out for "Arts Walk," but I'll look at this later.

Lucian Freud is one of my heroes, Robert and i've idolised Bacon since i was a child. i'll check out your link as like Patricia, i'm on my way out and while she is art walking, i'll be at the movies. :)

thanks Patricia, see you later.

ps. dont' get me started on Emin.

Great idea for a thread Sophi, well my new favorite artist for now happens to be Alberto Giacometti. Until recently I had no idea who this artist was, it was an faa member commenting on my sculptures who emailed me as said that my work reminded him so much of this artist that I being curious and looked up the artist and apart from being flattered for the compliment I soon made a connection with this famous artist's works and I am drawn to his work, I say there are no coincidences in life.

Alberto Giacometti, are one of the great ones.

I'm back already! Got downtown and found out Arts Walk doesn't start until tonight. Sheesh... I never bothered to read the brochure.

Okay, I've never really been a fan of the "popular" 70s painter, Christine Rosamond. However, when a framed print was left behind in the house my brother just bought, I became interested in finding out about her and did some research. I didn't know she had such a body of work, actually, and paired with the story of her relatively short, tragic life, my interest has become renewed. I think I am a fan!

Patricia, Christine Rosamond's work is so feminine and so skilled. i admire her and like you had not really paid attention. you're right, what an interesting woman she is. i'm not sure i'm a fan, but i am an admirer.

Mario, i have been familiar with giacometti's work since i was a teenager. i first saw one of his sculptures in liverpool art gallery and then i tried to draw like his sculptures for a while. he has pieces here at the met. i bet you like this one ...

http://www.metmuseum.org/collection/the-collection-online/search/489978

Patricia, i went to the movie. i'm not sure what i thought. for a movie based on attention to detail, sometimes the attention to detail was lacking and sometimes absurd. it was shocking and funny and somewhat glib. i thoroughly enjoyed it, but if i was the person dishing out oscars, this would not be the one. oh, and as my sister intimated, "its just so american!" ;) (just teasing!)

Carolyn Weltman

Frans Widerberg, Robert, i'm not sure either. i want to like them. they're certainly huge. and very emotional. i suspect i'm partly jealous because i dream of painting something as large.

as he describes them, i start to love them. :)

Thanks Sophi, I do like that one! As an artist from viewing many pictures of him he seems very passionate and obsessed almost a little crazy, I can relate especially to the little crazy.

My favorite is Isabelle Zacher-Finet, she teaches me a lot about the joy of painting. Of course I follow Carolyn Weltman and have done so for several years; she is also a favorite artist as I love erotica. Check them both out on the Web!

I just toured the galleries of each member who posted here, and I am speechless. I am not even equipped to say anything other than "wow"!! Not sure why I haven't taken the time to see the work of people with whom I've been speaking for a while now. So glad I did. I really don't even have words.

Carolyn, do you know why your sister is saying "it's so American"? I've been American all my life (lol, no kidding), so I have no frame of reference to understand her comment. Since you are from England originally (I believe), you probably know what she is saying. Glad to hear you enjoyed the movie, although it sounds like it's not going to win any awards.

Carolyn,

I lean towards the intellectual. Miro. While some would pigeon hole him as surrealism, I am not so sure he would
label him self as such.

I think he shows us pleasure in sorting out the existentialism of life.

ex·is·ten·tial·ism
ˌeɡzəˈsten(t)SHəˌlizəm/
noun
a philosophical theory or approach that emphasizes the existence of the individual person as a free and responsible agent determining their own development through acts of the will.

Robert, I have an affinity for your work. You are looking at Widerberg's work, interesting. Widerberg makes a leap of
intellect. The caves of France and Spain have the stick figures early man made. Widerberg makes only a small leap
intellectually. Not a bad leap at all, but a small measure of thought. I dont have that big an emotional affinity for Widerberg's art.
I do as I said for your art.

All artists' work is related one to the next among all artists in many many ways. Building a lasting intellectual set of constructs does
not mean giving up feeling at all. It can mean quite the opposite.

This week I am beginning to work in a very different direction, beauty. I can not elaborate for now. The images I am going to begin to make
will not be shown for some time. Perhaps in three weeks I will begin to show what I am doing this week into next.

Robert Wagner

Frans Widerberg is great, intelligent artist and emotional.I think one must be naiv or very intelligent to paint like him.And he is certainly intelligent.

I wish I was so intelligent so I could just paint, more like Chagall and Widerberg. I was working on a seascape all night and I was Happy about My painting, but this morning when I saw It,the first thing I did was to paint over it.So much time and energy for nothing.

But It think one becomes a more intelligent artist If you see progress in your work.

Thank you Dave.

Odilon Redon ,great artist

But I think Odd Nerdrum is maybe the greatest artist in the world.Greatest alive, certainly the best painter. The last Mozart in the art world.

Carolyn Weltman

Nerdrum's work is exceptional, Robert and i certainly see why you like his painting. he's living Old Master. did you know he was sentenced to jail? i'm sure you do. looking at your work, and Rembrandt's work and his work, i get it. Widerburg is a completely different painter and does not put soul into his work like Nerdrum. like you say, he's an intelligent artist.

Ed great clip about Goldsworthy. thanks for posting. i like that we're linking to things in this thread as it is introducing me to more artists. Goldsworthy feels like a man of nature gone wild.

Dave, try copying the link from the url, then make sure you hit the shift key after you post it. it might work, i'm not sure.

Patricia, we'd have to have an in depth conversation about my sister's comment. it is an inherently british thing to say. my sisters tell me i have american big white teeth too (since i had dental work over here. my dentists did make my gap disappear for which i never forgave them but otherwise i reckon i look pretty normal). as for the movie, my friend had a very different take on it. so don't go by me when i say i wouldn't give it any awards. i've never agreed with oscar choices anyway. or rarely. that's probably why i don't have that job. ;)

here is an faa artist's work that i like very much. i like how he handles paint.

Art Prints

Mario Carta

I used to tour some of the goodwill stores and thrift stores looking for old paintings when I live in Miami, once at a goodwill store I saw hanging on the wall this old appearing painting very dark obscure image. The price was $8.00 so I purchased it. It just looked mysterious almost ugly but I was very drawn to it. I later looked up the name Maurice Utrillo, and discovered another one of what became a favorite artist . The painting turned out to be an old numbered reproduction print which was varnished. I decided to sell it for close to $1000 on ebay, turns out the mayor of a city in France purchased it. I have found some real jewels this way, and discovered some great masters that I would not have. I might need to make my rounds again, it's a lot of fun hunting for master pieces even if I don't find any.

Carolyn Weltman

wow, Mario. you're so good at making money. :)

Mario Carta

yeah, I used to be better, seems like the many things that fade as we get older.I was a lot more ambitious then, now I'm wiser, I think.. Lol

Patricia Strand

Mario, don't get me started! All I need is a little suggestion to go thrift store hunting, and off I go. It's addictive. Congrats on finding a real money-maker!

Carolyn, glad you posted one of Cliff's paintings! That one has always been a favorite of mine.

Oh, and I begged my dentist to leave the gap, and he reluctantly did but thought I was crazy. It was how I saw myself. Funny how we get attached to our own appearance sometimes.
