Title Ideas?

While on an amazing mission trip to Guatemala, I snapped this photo. Getting home and after editing it, I came to really like it! Yes, it is very different then what I normally do but I thought I would upload it. What are your thought on it? Do you like it? Are there any tips you have for me for this kind of shot? Does it look abnormal in my portfolio? But the main question is, do you have any title suggestions? I am kind of on a limb here with not knowing what a good title would be. Thanks so much in advance!

Last day of school. No, it doesn't look abnormal, but there is something unsettling about this composition (not like all compositions must be soothing). Maybe it's just me though...

I think a description will tie the two together. This is your vision and I find it thought provoking. Knowing its from that region of the world is what evoked my thoughts.

It has something Shelby :-) can't put my finger on it but I can see(feel) why you like it.. It may just be my monitor setup but it seems a little over exposed. You seem to be losing a wee bit of detail where the wall meets the floor..

title suggestions... School's out. ..from the classic Alice Cooper song "School's out for the summer". The song also has the line "school's blown to pieces".. making it quite apt for this image.

I look at the boards on the ground/building materials and pair it with the school chair and desk.

To me (as a school teacher) your image has a dreamlike quality; how one might experience a memory of a classroom in a dream, or reminiscing about school in general, or reflecting back over the countless hours spent in a desk just like that one. I hope you find a title that works!

Hi Shelby -
I'm with Mike on this... This is not abstract art, IMO.
I'm not seeing the "hope" so many have expressed with titles for this image . . to me it has more of a haunting feeling, one of desolation - a bleakness. So I'm not sure that any of the titles which come to mind would be in mind with what you're looking for.
I think Alexander used the word "unsettling" re's composition - I think "Unsettled" would be an apt title.
Good luck with it! :)

Is it photojournalism? Are you trying to tell a story about this school? Were you helping to build a school? Who, what, where, why, how?

it has more of a - your in detention for the rest of your life feel, being that it's abandoned and in the corner. it would be an abstract if you shot just the chair legs meeting the body. shapes from something forming something else. the image is more of a still life or documentary.

Keep it simple...I would name it "The Chair" and let people's mind fill in the rest. Also it seemed to work well for George Strait :)

Being a teacher in a "former life," I do like the image. It reminds me of getting a room set up for the business of education - in a space that was not designed as a classroom. (Don't ask me how I know. LOL) It is actually referred to as a "Chair Desk."

Thank you everyone for the suggestions! I really liked Mike's idea and went with "Detention."

I love the picture! I know very little about photography, and someone commented it may be a bit overexposed..? I'm not sure? If that is the case it works and makes it that much better! I love everything about it!
I also realize you already decided on a title... but I thought I would throw one more out there;
'Sedentary' - (meaning; motionless, idle, inactive) that's the feeling I get looking at your photo.

Yes, Mike's idea was right on target. "Detention" is a perfect title.

Donna is on the right track, but since the image is a bit spare anyway, your title should complement it and give it an extra dimension, rather than just reiterate what we're already thinking.

Call it, 'The Crucible' to kick it up a notch.

What do I mean by crucible?

The image depicts an ordinary classroom, which represents a kind of crucible, wherein the relationship between teacher and student is tested so as to determine the potential for success, as well as the possibility of failure.

Looks like an old chair that has had years of good use and now its time to put it into retirement. Looks like maybe a remnants of an easel behind it.

I like the photograph, and agree it might be a bit overexposed. the chair seems floating needs to connect. I like to think of it in a more positive setting " Graduation Day" the classroom is empty for the last time, but the chair was used by many to further education. The light on the chair with washout beyond it suggest hope and the future.

I agree it's not abstract. It's very realistic even tho it has that dreamy, otherworldly quality. But I don't understand where people are seeing the hope and forward-looking feeling? I see destruction -- the boards and broken pieces of concrete. The chair seems the only thing not broken.
You said you were on a mission trip? Was this a school that was rebuilding or one being torn down? The photo, to me, looks sad, broken and desolate. It makes me feel as if I'm seeing the remnants left after the place was bombed. Is there a title that would tie into the purpose of the mission trip?
I like Mike Savad's other suggestion -- detention forever I believe he said because of the sadness and brokenness the image portrays.

@ Teal

I thought of it as a building site, where children have yet to find if they are dumb are bright, with Mairo off camera having a snooze.

@Geordie That's an interesting thought -- where the children have yet to discover if they are dumb or bright...
Who is Mairo, who is off camera snoozing?
