Your Youtube Channel

I've just recently started making work in progress videos and decided to start a YouTube Channel to share with my followers. Do you have a YouTube Channel you use for your art videos?...slide shows...works in progress?

If so please share here on this thread: links to your YouTube channel and any of your art videos/slide shows of your art that YOU created. Please only share your art videos/channels/slideshows...this way others can find you and subscribe to your channels if they would like and if you have one.

(Abbie I searched for this topic and didn't see a thread for YouTube channels however if there is one that I missed let me know and I will close this thread..thanks)

It's really interesting to watch you create your art, Sheena. I have an old YouTube channel with some of my nature videos. I keep meaning to put together some slide shows. Anyway, here's mine ~ http://www.youtube.com/funnaturephotography. My favorite video of baby coyotes playing is buried in there ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UajDNJ7m-u8

Also, I have a great tutorial on how to create slideshow movies similar to the one I posted above here:

Video Tutorial: Windows Live Movie Maker for artists – Showcase your artwork!

The post includes a video tutorial (also on my YouTube channel) as well as some handy resources such as sources for legal music to include with your videos.

I hope this is helpful to someone! :-)

Hi, Sheena,

I'm constantly telling artists to start a YouTube channel! Where else can you set up such an exciting showcase for your art . . . for FREE? ;-)

Here's my YouTube channel:

A recent 'Show Your February Videos' thread:

This is one of my first videos uploaded to YouTube. Ironic, it is one of my most popular. Far from viral, I am pleased with the number of views it has received.

I am also happy in that I gave Clint Black credit for his wonderful song---there is an option for one to by the mp3. I have no problem with helping Mr Black promote his wonderful work in return for his allowing me to showcase my own work.

That said, the embedding code is disallowed and I am not sure the link to the video will work here on FAA. At least not with a thumbnail.

At any rate, here is is.

I find the ads on Youtube terribly distracting and even obnoxious. Bad enough I won't send people there. But I do have a slide show and will create many more in the future.

John, I use Firefox with Ad Blocker, so haven't noticed that YouTube ads have gotten out of control. I'll have to check that out.

Wendy, so do I (Google Chrome with adblocker), so it took friends who do not have adblocker to tell me about the ads. That came as a surprise to me.

Hi Sheena, I recently started a you tube channel ,and the biggest problem I have found, it is difficult to get the videos recognized . the way I understand the more subscribers you get ,the more likes and comments you get the more exposure the video gets. I have had 3 videos up for over a month and only have 14 people see the content. now as for FAA I put 6 pics up on sunday and by Tuesday I've already have 70 people who have seen my pictures. I hope you have better success than I have had.

Awesome stuff everyone......when my kids go to bed tonight I am going to sit down and thoroughly go through everything and get subscribed to everyone......

@Ronny I totally get it...I think its going to be like anything......market...share and share some more....I spend more time marketing my work and sharing my stuff all over the internet than I do making art and drawing......I just had colored Pencil magazine share one of my clips and also am hoping to get PanPastel to as well..... hopefully someday......
We the artists have to make ourselves noticed or we fade into the background because the talent is endless and the population of artists doing exactly what we are doing is vast ...it's TONS of work and sometimes gets no results in the end....but it never hurts to try.....I may try youtube and it does nothing for me or on the other hand it could get shared or seen by the right person and voila!.........motivation, determination and ambition drives me....some would say I'm a silly amateur (they are probably right). There are days I realize I have so much work to do. I share videos everywhere I can....instagram....facebook...pinterest.....even plan to put one up on my website here on FAA.....may do absolutely nothing or it may help. Regardless I'm the one who has to get it out there and hopefully once I get a decent following of fans they will help by sharing them for me......right now I am trying to establish an audience...a fan base and loyal customers....this will take years...so I better get busy. Thanks for your input Ronny good luck!!!

John I get what your saying....totally ...like I said its just something Im trying thanks for your insight

like in this thread I've gotten mixed reviews about youtube.....I dont know if I like it yet...just started sharing my art on it. Thanks everyone for chiming in hope this thread will generate some subscribers and even if not I am enjoying your videos.

YOU made this not your computer. as some often don't understand........just as my PanPastels and pencils are my tools your computer for this piece was your weapon of choice. Thanks, Sheena! Now that I have Camtasia it will be really easy to make more videos like it. Although, truth be told, I never really got into my Wacom tablet. I think if I had a Cintiq it would be a different story. I just use my trusty old mouse. He's seen better days, but he still does the trick.

I have just reached 6,000 views on my one video posted above. (4 posts up)Thanks to all who visited, liked and commented. I could use some more. (Hint). I have no idea how many actually click through to my site. But my photographs get plenty of views and it can only help. One nice thing is it is fairly easy to refind it.

I guess I should make a few more. Even if they are not viral they can help in marketing yourself and your work.

Thank you Sheena for posting about YouTube and the idea of using it to market artwork. The idea occurred to me just days ago with one of my video slideshows on Texture Art Photography. I created it for a presentation and class I teach. I also did many video slideshows to market wedding and portrait photography some years ago.

This thread has inspired me to do more for art marketing. Here is a link to my channel, but there is only one video there now that I would use to market my current work. I'll post it here.

Chris Bordeleau

I have a youtube channel unrelated to photography... I'm planning on starting a new channel soon that is photography / photoshop / editing related... There are lots of those channels so getting a following will take a while...

Unlike others in this thread I love the ads... I make about $300 a month on ad revenue on my other channel... My videos get about 1500-2000 views a day... I have around 3000 subscribers...

If anyone is interested if Off-Grid cabins / building / making things from scratch (breads, maple syrup, butter, etc) / fixing old tractors / chainsaws / etc feel free to subscribe :) http://youtube.com/buffcleb

My last couple of videos were from me building my maple syrup sugar shack... I have one I need to upload this week on my shipping pallet hunting blind... I also do product reviews on stuff I use there or in someway related...

Some photography has made it into my videos... I do some time-lapse from time to time... Here is one of those videos Timelapse - Fireflies and stars

If you want real money on youtube start a gaming channel... my kids watch mindcraft videos... the people who upload them are making 6 figures easy...

Lara Virginia

Love your channel Chris...I'll be returning to view more! My kids are the same, they are constantly browsing utube looking at gamers channels, mindcraft in particular. It makes sense to earn money from it if you can...I'm still far too new at it yet and have only just worked out how to upload a video! Thanks for sharing and I've subscribed!

Suzanne Powers

Smart Chris, videos on "how to" helps people! Sounds like more cash in the short run, good idea to add some of that type of video while waiting on the effects of the art video which take longer to see effects, more about the artist and how they work.

Chris Bordeleau

I started doing it years ago... now I just video every project... replace the belt on the tractor create a video... sharpen a chainsaw chain create a video... install a roof... create a video.. almost seems silly...

I watch amazon for deals and if they have something related... like a machete, axe, outdoor stove, etc... cheap I buy it and review it... I know I will break even in a year... I then link back to amazon with a referrer code and get money from them... not a lot... about $30 a month...

Its a nickel and dime thing... but it adds up... I am saving up for a new 35 hp diesel tractor... I like my 50 and 70 year old tractors but something that starts most of the time... especially in the cold... with a front end loader would be real nice... then when I get that record a bunch of videos :)

Lara Virginia

Fantastic Chris...I'm a full time gardener and landscaper for 8 months of the year and the amount of times I haven't taken videos or photos of work, doesn't bear thinking about! But your way seems to be a good way...it's all the little amounts that make up to a living...that and damn hard work too, so congratulations to you!

Toby McGuire

Chris great channel! Looks like you're getting some good success on YouTube! I attempted a channel which I still periodically upload to but I'm lucky to get a hundred views in the course of a day. Really, I do it mostly for myself.

https://www.youtube.com/user/SuperLearningStuff

I've actually thought of doing a retro gaming channel - I love games from the 8/16 bit era and it would be fun to do play-throughs on YouTube. Minecraft channels (and gaming channels in general) are a dime a dozen and a very miniscule percentage of them are making any significant money. A few do manage to get to six figure status but I'm guessing the odds of being one of them is about the same as winning the lottery.

Chris Bordeleau

I don't follow gaming... I just know the ones my kids watch... guy uploads a video and it seems like he has 100k views the first day... based the $$ on my own pay per view...

The retro thing could be worth a go... make sure you watch other gaming videos and comment... you'll get higher views end might end up as a related video... Try and find retro games kids are into... they watch more... if there are retro gaming forums post on them... keep you channel link in you signature... and post a video once and a while...

It took a long time to get to where I am... And my channel is still small... My viewers varied... I draw from hippies, survivalist, farmers, hunters, preppers, back to the landers and keyboard commandos from each of those groups... I come up high enough in the search for off-grid living that I have been contacted 4 times now by producers looking have me on one of those reality shows... I have talked to all of them but there were looking for survivalist / end of the world types... which I am not... I

When I veer off topic my views go down... I do some baking videos using hand ground wheat flour... my viewers are not really into that and my videos do not show up high enough in the search for others to find them... but I still like doing them once in a while... mostly over the winter when I have time... maybe they will catch on...

The thing with youtube is they reward people who upload new content... i upload about once every 1 to 2 weeks... sometimes I upload several videos and I break them into subject specific videos so they index better... I am still learning...

I need to work on my production value... but I am a one man show so getting good panning shots when I am in the frame or focus changes just are not possible... getting better audio and a dedicated video camera (I use my dSlr now) are my next steps...

Toby McGuire

Yea, you can increase production value fairly cheaply. Using a DSLR with a sharp prime lens can give your video a nice sheen. Also a nice microphone like a Blue Yeti can make the audio clearer (also removing background hiss and amping up the voice track with audio software like Audacity). Editing my audio in Audacity has made my voice track 100x better. Even if you record on the PC internal mic or onboard camera mic Audacity can really clean it up. It's amazing how easy it is to remove the background hiss. Also, uploading in 720p or 1080p so the video looks crisp in fullscreen mode is another thing. Not critiquing you at all since I don't know your process, just things that I have done so far.

I haven't uploaded since July... I always stress on which topics to cover and I've been much more into photography of late... Some of my videos gets regular views and others get one or two a day if that, and finding a subscriber base has been a challenge to say the least.

My latest video, to promote Holiday Cards.

I am really intrigued by this, thank you for starting this Sheena, your work is really good! I love watching the Les Stround Survivorman series, so I am thinking of filming myself on my outdoor outings to differ locations that I do my landscape photography. Kind of take the audience with me on my hikes, see how I set up, what I am looking fior, and just help them to see what goes into these shoots. Haha, but I only have my DSLR that I do my actual photography on, so I am trying to figure out an inexpensive way to do this without having to buy a new video camera.

Oh and April Moen, good call on Josh Garrels for your music! It worked perfectly with your art! I love that guy!

Thus far I've only published one video via Youtube. Rather then being a how-to or work in progress it's a video guide to a great place for camping, photography, or plein air I suppose if you want to carry your easel and paints 8 miles. It's certainly a great spot to recharge if you're able to get there.

Thanks for posting this thread, Sheena. Loved your videos and watched many of the others and subscribed. So much talent coming out just on one short thread.

I enjoy working on my videos and sort of go at it in "binges". I always bring my camera and/or video wherever i go but sometimes don't sit down to edit for so long that the editing screen looks like something that I normally wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole. But lately I have been getting into it again.

Here is one of mine, where I painted a painting for a silent auction at a charity event.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmRVMm4UwBA

I was thinking it might be a good idea to start a group here in FAA about doing youtube (or other) videos. We could regularly post our new videos there and give each other tips and suggestions. Any takers?

Anyway - I am definitely going to watch all of Chris's videos - we have a similar place up in the Laurentians and I'm sure we will get a lot of ideas on your channel.

I had to chuckle at the timeliness of this topic. My 13 y/o son has been begging me to share his YouTube channel on social media. He is an artistic kid, and his favorite medium of the last few years has been Lego. He has gotten really good at making custom mini-figures....taking those little Lego guys and altering/adding with play-doh and paint to them to make them different characters. He then makes videos about how he did it, as well as videos of other MOCs he has made. (MOC stands for My Own Creation in Lego-ese).

If anyone else lives with a Lego-maniac, feel free to share. My boy would love it. ; )

Here is one of a Mario character he made:
