Description
These adopted Wild Burros, shaggy with winter coats, on range near Paonia, Colorado are getting a little help from local bird pest control agents! Wild Burros which average 5 ft. at the shoulders and weigh up to 350 lbs. when mature were introduced into the North American deserts by the Spaniards in the 1500s. Others escaped or were released during the settlement of the West. Having been indigenous to Africa they are very hardy in arid country tolerating a loss of up to 30% body weight due to dehydration and need only 5 min. of drinking to recover it. Since they are sure-footed, can locate food in barren terrain and can carry heavy loads for days through hot, dry environments they were valuable to our early prospectors as they traveled across deserts in search of gold and silver. These beasts of burden were known to survive when their owners perished in harsh conditions.
