Description
Abstract or Impressionist Photograph "Traveling Through Space to New Worlds." My father used to berate me for buying Science Fiction Comics or books, and said, "That is ridiculous, no one will ever travel through space." But, he lived to see Astronauts do just that and retracted his words.
It really has been amazing to me to see the dramatic changes in the world since I was in grade school. We hardly had a party line telephone, and airplanes took many hours to cross the ocean. And it seemed like a "minute" later there were jets crossing oceans, in the time it had taken to fly from Boston or NYC to Los Angeles.
From riding in my first car ride with a Rumble Seat in the early 30's, to having my own in the 40's. During a time we did not even have TV in our homes, we went to riding in cars with TV's, GPS. From two pound plus phones hard wired into our homes to telephones smaller than the dial on our home phone, which are actually two way radios.
When little was amazed listening to Charley McCarthy or Helen Trent and Fibber McGee and Molly on Sunday night with a crystal set. Then to radios four times the size of the average TV today, to Huge picture tubes. To TV's that we can carry in our pocket. Children today use a Cellphone, which is more sophisticated than the best of TV's. They can watch movies on what is really a tiny computer we call a cellphone. When I went in the Army in 1946, entered the world of computers, which filled an entire room larger than the average home.
In the near future.
By 2030-2040 cars which can brake to prevent accidents on their own today, will not even have steering wheels. One day people will sit back and enjoy the ride, as passengers in their own vehicle. Such cars will be much safer than any today when drivers are in control. Though will probably not live to see this, my children will.
So is it too much to expect that in the near future that man will be traveling to many New Worlds? When I was young, airplanes flew at 65 MPH, today they can travel at two and three times the speed of sound. One day they may even travel at the speed of light. Einstein said, Imagine that you can travel on a beam of light, we just may be doing that.
