Nadines acrylic painting on Canvas of the Verde River.
Oak Creek in Oak Creek National Monument flows into the Verde River in Verde Valley. So the canyon the river flows through is much like Oak Creek, just becoming wider with a greater flow of water. The State stocks Verde River with 100,000 Trout, at least twice each year, just above Thousand Trails Preserve, which makes it a prime fishing area.
Oak Creek Canyon is a river gorge located along the Mogollon Rim in northern Arizona between the cities of Flagstaff and Sedona. There are stretches of the creek that can be reached from the road, like at the National Park Campground and parking along the creek. When the water is low in summer, at times you can ford the creek or walk on rocks to get to the other side.
The canyon is often described as a smaller cousin of the Grand Canyon because of its scenic beauty. State Route 89A enters the canyon on its north end via a series of hairpin turns before traversing the bottom of the canyon for about 13 miles until the highway enters the town of Sedona. The Oak Creek Canyon Sedona area is second only to Grand Canyon as the most popular tourist destination in Arizona, and Cottonwood is less than 20 miles south of Sedona.
Oak Creek, a tributary of the Verde River, flows along the bottom of the canyon, and is one of the few perennial streams in the high desert region of northern Oak Creek is largely responsible for carving the modern Oak Creek Canyon, although movement along the Oak Creek Fault, a 30-mile long north-south normal fault line, is thought to have played a role as well.
