Description
The bell tower of St George's Church - The original bell tower of the Gothic church stood in front of the present church facade on the west side and was demolished at the beginning of the 17th century, when the church complex was thoroughly renovated. A new freestanding bell tower, placed between the presbytery of St George's and the future baptistery, was built between 1600 and 1615. It was designed on the model of the bell tower of St Mark's Church in Venice. Together with the rotating statue of the Archangel St Michael at the top, which shows the direction of the wind, the bell tower is 46.45 metres high. The bell tower also has a clock. One of the surviving bells is from the previous bell tower, cast in 1477, and still rings out the full hours. In 2015, the bell tower was renovated and two new bells, a gift from the parish of Berlin, were installed, while the two old broken bells were stored in the parish garden. The preserved mechanism of the church clock is also a valuable monument of technical heritage.
