Description
Savudrijska Street No.9 Piran - The bourgeois building, whose peculiarity is pointed out by a plaque, but only with the inscription that it is a 17th-century Baroque building. Three stone heads catch the eye of the closer observer. Not much is known about them or the house, so all sorts of stories are swirling around them, stirring the imagination. Whoseever faces are captured in stone, it could be a new compelling Piranese story.
The commemorative postmark, which will be used for a few days to stamp letters and postcards at the local post office, features an image of one of the world's greatest playwrights, William Shakespeare, with Piran's St George's Church in the background. The initiative was taken by Mitja Jančar from the Philatelic and Numismatic Society of Piran, who, on the 450th anniversary of the playwright's birth, drew attention to his connection with our town.
Jančar says: "The head above the front door is supposed to represent Shakespeare, and those above the balcony windows on the first floor are undoubtedly Desdemona and Othello, the heroes of his tragedy Othello.
