Description
St George's Church Piran - The Baroque church with its bell tower and baptistery dominates the hill above the town. The hillside with the church complex was fortified with buttressed arches, built gradually from the mid-17th to the early 19th century. The Baroque hall church was built after 1595 on the site of an older Gothic church consecrated in 1344. The church was completed and rededicated in 1637. The west façade is designed as a temple façade with pilaster articulation and a triangular gable, with a perceptible influence of the Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio. According to archival data, the façade of the church was made by the stonemason Bonfante Torre in 1608. The interior of the church is characterised by its simple architecture, complemented by high-quality church furnishings dating from the 17th century. The nave is covered by a richly articulated wooden ceiling with paintings on canvas. In the presbytery, wooden Baroque pews are preserved, dedicated to the captain and the mayor of Piran.
