Description
The Long Tailed Tit (Aegithalos Caudatus) is a small bird (at only 13-15 cm in length, including its 7-9 cm tail). It is round-bodied with a short, stubby bill and a very long, narrow tail. The sexes look the same with a mainly black and white plumage coloured with variable amounts of grey and pink.
The long-tailed tit is found throughout temperate Europe and Asia. It can be found in deciduous and mixed woodland, on farmland, on heathland with scattered trees, bushes and hedges, and in parks and gardens.
The Long Tailed Tit's year-round diet is of insects and they are usually found in social groups moving with agility through trees and bushes.
Their nest, usually built in thorny bushes less than 3 metres above the ground, is constructed from 4 materials - lichen, feathers, spider egg cocoons and moss. The nest is a flexible sac with a small, round entrance on top. The structural stability of the nest is provided by a mesh of moss and spider silk. The outside is camouflaged using pale lichens and the inside is insulated using downy feathers.
