Description
The eagle owl (bubo bubo) is the largest european owl at 70cms tall and with a wingspan of 180cms. It has prominent ear tufts and a heavily marked brown plumage.
The eagle owl is widely distributed and found in a number of habitats - mountain regions, coniferous forests, steppes and other relatively remote places.
It is a mostly nocturnal predator, hunting in twighlight by sight rather than sound. Its main food being small mammals but it also hunts for birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, large insects and other assorted invertebrates.
Eagle-owls will pair for life and usually engage in annual courtship rituals to re-affirm pair bonds. They typically breed on cliff ledges, in gullies, among rocks or in some other concealed locations. They do not build nests or add material but instead just nest on the surface or material already present.
The female incubates the eggs and broods the young, and the male provides food for her and the young when they hatch.
They are long lived - living up to 30 years in the wild and over 65 years in captivity.
