Description
The chaffinch (fringilla coelebs) is a small songbird (wingspan about 26 cms) of the finch family. It is a common european resident found in woodlands, farms, parks and gardens and seldom strays far from it nest. However the northern and eastern european birds will migrate south and west for the winter.
Their main food is seed and grain but they will eat insects in the breeding season, and the young are fed extensively on insects.
Their nest is which is built by the female in the fork of a bush or tree several metres above the ground. The nest is in the form of a deep cup lined with thin roots and feathers. The outside is covered with a layer of lichen and spider silk over an inner layer of moss and grass.
The male has a dark forehead and a blue-grey crown, nape and upper mantle. The rump is a light olive-green; the lower mantle and back are brown. The side of head, throat and breast are dull rust-red merging to pale creamy-pink on the belly. Each wing has a contrasting white panel.
The adult female is duller than the male. The head and most upperparts being in shades of grey-brown whilst the lower back and rump are a dull olive green and the underparts are paler.
