Description
The winter of 1983-84 was one of the worst Dawn's family had ever known, Snowed in for weeks at the family cabin in the remote Snowy Range foothills of Wyoming, the artist's father, Willoughby, became ill. Even so, he tried along with the rest of the family to save the life of a great horned owl who appeared one morning, on the verge of death. They fed it rabbits and gave it shelter but, sadly, the owl died. A few days later, Willoughby also passed away. The family found his last story and poem, "To the Great Horned Owl Come to My Doorstep Dying," and realized how vitally important the owl had been to Willoughby in his last days. Dawn, his youngest daughter, often dreamed that he came to visit her from out of the universe. Sometimes the owl came with him, and sometimes he and the owl had merged to become one spirit.

This reminds me of the time a dove flew into my arms from a tree. It was ill. I took it home and cared for it until it finally died. Every time I see or hear a dove, that memory returns to me.
