Description
The High Kirk of Glasgow as seen from the footbridge over a sunken roadway leading to the Glasgow Necropolis, a prominent hill east of the ancient structure. Glasgow Cathedral has been a landmark of Glasgow, Scotland since 1197, and is not the first church built on this site.
The current Glasgow Cathedral is actually the second on this site, and it was constructed atop the remains of the first cathedral which was built in 1136 but was subsequently damaged by fire. It too, stood atop the ruins of the first church constructed here circa 600 BP where St. Mungo, patron saint of Glasgow was buried. His remains still lie in the cellar of the current cathedral.
High Kirk of Glasgow or Glasgow Cathedral, also known as the St Mungo's Cathedral, is the oldest building in Glasgow. It survived the Scottish Reformation of 1560 though it was "cleansed" of its Catholic furnishings at that time. Ten years of disrepair later, the Glasgow town council began raising funds to maintain the structure. It became Crown property in 1587. The entire cathedral building passed into the care of the state in 1857, and today it is the responsibility of Historic Environment Scotland. The congregation is today part of the Church of Scotland's Presbytery of Glasgow. It is one of the greatest and grandest old structures of the British Isles and Northern Europe.
