Description
Gastric gland false-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the mucous membrane lining the stomach, featuring a single, circular gastric gland. The glands secrete gastric juice (hydrochloric acid & enzyme pepsin) and a protective mucous, derived from the simple, columnar cells (moss-like) that comprise the mucous membrane. Remnants of stomach contents appear yellow; one bit is over the opening to the gland. Gastric glands are formed by simple invagination or tubular ingrowth of this mucosa into the underlying lamina propria. Magnification x550 at 6x7cm size. Different colour version as of Plate 12 in Viaggio". This image yellow debris on jade blue, Plate 12 pale violet on bright green."
