Description
Gastric glands. Light micrograph of a longitudinal section through the glands of the gastric mucosa of the stomach. The straight and tubular glands (pink, running from top to bottom) produce gastric juice from three types of secretory cells. Mucus- secreting cells cover the stomach surface and line the pits into which the glands open (not seen). Parietal cells secrete hydrochloric acid and are the pale, irregularly shaped cells with centrally located nuclei. Peptic cells secrete the digestive enzyme pepsin and are located at the base of the glands (dark pink clusters at lower frame). Beneath the glands (blue, bottom) is the muscle layer. Haematoxylin and eosin stained.
