Description
Stomach cancer. Light micrograph of a section through an adenocarcinoma in stomach tissue. This is a cancer of the glandular lining that is found in many different organs, including the digestive tract. In the stomach it arises from mucosal cells that secrete the mucus that protects the stomach wall. Cancer is uncontrolled cellular replication. Cells replicate by cellular division (mitosis) and such mitotic activity is seen as the dark-stained nuclei (one at lower right). Stomach cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths. Surgery to remove the cancerous region may improve survival chances, but the prognosis is poor.
