Description
The immense power of water in the West is a source of wonder, and I’m not writing about the enormous hydroelectric energy we’ve harnessed over the last 75 years, or even the vast amounts of acreage we’ve been able to put into production with it. Water has produced the vast canyons of the Colorado Plateau, and even more astonishing, has breached the Cascade Range where the Columbia River scoured its beautiful gorge through the ancient basalts of the mountains. It has flowed from high in the Rockies, across eastern and central Washington and into the deep canyon along the Oregon and Washington State border on its way to the Pacific Ocean, perhaps for as long as 17 million years while the Cascade Mountains formed. But the most dynamic events were the Lake Missoula Floods at the end of the last ice age that cut the steep, dramatic walls we find in the Columbia Gorge today.
Here a barge is guided westward through the Columbia Gorge with many spring waterfalls of Washington State cascading off of the basalt cliffs behind. This image was made in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.
