Description
Apparently in the 14th Century, the Pope got tired of all the trouble in Rome and set up the Papacy in Avignon France. Although the Pope is long gone from here and his former residence is somewhat less habitable as you can see in the distance, it still produces some of the world's finest wines. A look at the "soil" makes one wonder how you could grow anything in this rocky and pebbly place but apparently wine grapes thrive here. This was a commission piece and is in a private collection in California.

Thank you Ana. I really enjoyed painting this one. Oddly, the rocky soil was the biggest challenge for me.........all those darn cobblestones!!! HA!!
