Description
This is a 12 inch by 16 inch acrylic on stretched canvas painting.
As so often happens, I had a dream about doing this painting. The Beatle song, Blackbird Singing, kept running through my head.
This is based on some old photographs that I took a few years ago. A boat-tailed grackle was singing his heart out. This was in an area of the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge, called Blackpoint. This little guy was perched near the top of mangrove trees along the brackish waters of the Indian River. Central Florida boat-tailed grackles are different from others in the world in that they have dark eyes. Adult male boat-tailed grackles are large, lanky song bird with a long V-shaped tail. It has a long pointed bill. Adult males are glossy black overall with an iridescent purple sheen on the head.
With all the protests going on these days, I was reminded of this bird that I watched a few years ago. I looked up the history of the song.
Paul McCartney wrote this about the civil rights struggle for African Americans after reading about race riots in the US. "I was sitting around with my acoustic guitar and I'd heard about the civil rights troubles that were happening in the '60s in Alabama, Mississippi, Little Rock in particular," he told GQ. "I just thought it would be really good if I could write something that if it ever reached any of the people going through those problems, it might give them a little bit of hope. So, I wrote 'Blackbird.'"
Here are the lyrics...
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to be free
Blackbird fly, blackbird fly
Into the light of a dark black night
Blackbird fly, blackbird fly
Into the light of a dark black night
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
You were only waiting for this moment to arise

This is a fabulous painting, AnnaJo, and I love to read that you dreamed about it! I have several paintings in my gallery that appeared to me in dreams and bugged me nightly until I painted them! L/F this beauty!
AnnaJo Vahle replied:
Thank you, Conni. It is particularly satisfying to paint something like that, isn't it?
