Description
This watercolor painting is one half of a diptych depicting the ramparts and the seawall of Batroun. Locals from this Lebanese town will tell you that the wall is a natural phenomenon: A rock barrier that protects the town of Batroun from the onslaught of the sea. Other sources claim the Phoenicians, some three thousand years ago, utilized and reinforced a quarry here. None of these explanations are quite satisfactory. Martin Giesen captured both, the ruined ramparts in-land and the sea wall itself, in a set of two watercolors. Batroun is located 54 kms north of Beirut. It is a small Maronite town on the coast with fishing ports and attractive old churches.
