Description
Sharjah is one of the seven emirates of the UAE. It is an old settlement that traces its beginnings to five thousand years ago. Under the leadership of HH Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Sharjah has become a regional leader in culture and education. Many distinguished buildings grace Sharjah City, including numerous mosques in various Islamic building traditions. Al Nour Mosque was built recently on the waterfront of Khor Khalid. This two-minaret mosque has a dome-in-square plan and follows Ottoman-Turkish patterns which themselves trace their architectural roots to the Hagia Sophia built in Byzantine Constantinople in the 6th Century .
