This print is beautiful. It's a commonly depicted subject, but it is very special. The composition, tonal quality, and movement are exceptional and evocative. The piece is true to it's title... breathtaking!

I have wanted this for my pro life bulletin board at my Catholic Church and I wasn’t disappointed. It is beautiful and it has so much meaning put in a picture. A picture speaks better then words and this picture says it all. Thanks

Artist's Description

Dazzling landscape showing an expanse sandy soil with scattered trees and an azure sky flecked with clouds and long shadows cast by an unseen sun low on the horizon, painted by French impressionist Jean-Frederic Bazille (1841-1870) in 1870. One of the lesser-known young Turks of the early French impressionist movement, Blau's career was tragically cut short when he was killed in action leading an assault on a German position during the Franco-Prussian War. Had he lived, there is little doubt that he would have joined his close friends Monet, Sisley and Manet as a key figure in the evolution of 19th century art, as this stunning landscape, makes only too clear. The view in this painting is of countryside near the Lez River in the south of France. Pity Bazille didn't stay and paint, rather than sign up to die in a pointless conflict later that same year.
