Fan Art?

As a buyer, how can I distinguish between paintings/prints that have been officially licensed by their respective copyright owners eg. Star Wars, or Marvel DC (Disney) characters? I don't wish to be an accessory to somebody who may be breaking the law.

Really the only way is to contact the artist and ask. Or search the web specifically for licensed products from those companies. Most places that offer officially licensed products will proudly display that fact.

All of those companies have their own websites where they sell their merchandise. You can contact those companies and ask where you can get their merchandise from authorized dealers.

Thank you Cynthia - that's what I thought, but I haven't noticed anyone displaying the fact that they are licensed on this site as yet!
With reference to Sharon's comment (and thank you!) I am interested in buying off this site as I have registered with Fine Art America, so I guess it's a question of asking the individual artists that I'm interested in :)

I might be putting my neck in a loose, by saying the following...But what the heck:

RE: "Disney"," DC Comics", "Star Wars"

If you see the work here, you can feel confident that the work was Not authorized by the powers to be.

a good guess would be that if they were official - they wouldn't be selling it here. many of those licenses are expensive and often carry stipulations that say you have to sell a certain amount to keep the license. i would say most are taking it and hoping they won't be caught. but you can ask them. its more important though for you to ask the parent company because the person that made it, is only justifying it to themselves when they see other people doing it and so on.

your better off selling your own art here, and not depending on famous copyrighted and trademarked cartoons. my guess is, the companies that own them won't let you use it. fan art and selling fan art are two different things.

AS a buyer - I'd go to Walmart or some such to purchase a print/poster. If I want a "painting" - find a gallery that carries paintings of things like this - or an art festival or fair.

Oops - just realized you live in the UK - don't know if you have a Walmart - LOL

I can see where you would worry about purchasing a print from the US and having it go through customs - who might want to know if the image passes the © muster for the UK or EU.

Walmart operates under 69 banners in 27 countries. I think its called Asda in UK. No shortage of places to buy Frozen merchandise. Just look for the copyright information at the bottom of the print.

Roy, thanks. I don't want to buy poster art - and yes we could buy from Walmart in the UK and other poster franchises. I like to see an artist's honest and unique representation of various characters that I like, in different mediums - my concern is the providence (licensing!)
Thanks Mike! I can't post my own artwork - I'm a classical musician not a painter but I love all kinds of art!
Thanks for suggesting Frozen, Edward! Not really my thing if I'm honest! I was actually drawn to some of your artwork earlier today, so I should (as suggested by Cynthia above) pose my question directly to you.
To Mr Swezey - many thanks! The suggestion therefore is, that many of the pieces uploaded on this site have not been moderated by Fine Arts America -

I didn't realise Walmart had come to the UK?

Cool, contact me at sales@dogfordstudios.com - just send me a note and I'll send you a discount code.

Abbie - off topic, but thought I'd clear up. Asda = Walmart.... same company.

And yes, contacting artists directly is best option. If you really want to make sure, you can ask for proof of license.

Looks like Asda is a supermarket? Maybe not the same thing as Walmart but owned by Walmart corp.

Asda is the same as a super walmart. They have the supermarket bit, and they sell household stuff, clothes (the carry the George brand in some US walmarts now). It is essentially a mirror copy of a superwalmart.

Even China has Walmart.
