Help With Choosing

Obviously this is a very unfinished painting and, as I am laid up in bed with a bad hip, probably going to take a while lol

It will be pegasus with fairies grooming her. (mine is a her because pegasus is fiction and can be whatever I want)

I did not do the background as fully as I normally would because I was going to have twigs sweeping in from both sides, like looking in on a clearing you suddenly came across.

But now I'm thinking 3 scenarios

1. fade out and blur all the outside and just have the pony and fairies etc
2. keep to my original plan
3. work on the background more and forget the front but have more little things

I am not looking for a critique of what I have done on the pegasus so far as this is how I want her and she is not finished. Im just looking for help in deciding which of the scenarios to go with and what to add if anything

Thank you :D

i think the horse should be doing something. like drinking or looking at its reflection in a pond. because it's mythical i see it as a dark forest hidden in the shadows. or a cypress look. something with water, or a place where bambi might hang out. the entire scene should have a magical look to it, fairies should glow and sparkle, reflections and effects. but i think the background should be darker than the rest so the horse can stand out better.

That is a good point and someone else actually said she should be looking at her reflection or drinking.......... Thank you, Mike

Number 2, I would pick number 2

Ha ha funny, I wanted to say I would keep fairies and Pegasus and blur the rest and focus on the beauty of fairies and Pegasus. Freudian slip.

Thank you :)

I would keep all detail but the fairies and Pegasus minimized, especially towards the edges and corners. #2 sounds intriguing and could work but would be hard to pull off.

Abbie,

How is your back? Now your hip? Feel better soon.

Abbie, paint the pegasus a very rich somewhat dark red. Go into a place with the pegasus that no one has ever gone.

A royal red. Make it stand out completely.

Thanks guys :)

Hi Isabella

Can I pass on an idea? Based on how I work through this kind of problem?

Just a hunch, if you saw your work finished you'd know what felt right?

I'd do all three versions by drawing over a photograph of the painting on my ipad, or print if off and draw on that.

Then back to the canvas when I felt confident with the one that feels right for me.

Option 2, original plan but add a stream, brook for Peggy'sus to be drinking while she's being groomed :o) Love the twig, branches idea - if I understand it correctly to be the viewer looking through them to the scene.

Abbie, hope you are on the mend. One of my favorite backgrounds are dark, NOT BLACK, with hints of foliage. This creates a dramatic scene and causes the subject to almost jump out of the painting. (especially a white subject) It would be very easy to do. Sorry, I have to be different...Hugs

I vote No. 1.

I have no problem with the head-down position of the horse. For me, there does not need to be a literal visual representation of WHY that gesture is there. ... I automatically assume "eating grass" -- what else is a horse gonna do with its head down, if no obvious water pond is there?

Understating the background in a blur, to me, would keep it simple in an elegant sense, and I predict would keep the focus strong, increasing the power of the piece.

Of course, those are just words. ... We all know how reality goes. (^_^)

Ok

Thank you one and all

I'm going with my original idea after darkening the background to bring my characters into focus..

I appreciate your help very much!
