My Daily Amusement

Today I took a ride to the beach just to get out of the house for a few hours which I often do. I sat watching and taking pictures of a young reddish egret hunting in the shallow falling tides, Then a snowy egret flies in and the competition begins! As they chase fish and are trying to out run one another, they began chasing the same poor little mullet who had to jump on the sand bar to avoid becoming lunch. It did not work! The snowy egret won the race and prize if any of you were wondering.
Just thought that I would share my cheerful experience with you all.

That sounds like so much fun, getting to watch the birds do this. (-:

It is fun Cheryl. And it helps that I love birds so much plus I can get my feet all sandy and smell the ocean air.

Sand and ocean air. Don't get a lot of that in Colorado...>sigh<
We do get seabirds, oddly enough: seagulls, cormorants, blue herons...

And this year, mosquitos, because of all the rain...

I enjoy watching animals chasing food too, fun :D!

Mosquitoes in Colorado? I thought that they were only bad in the deep south. Xueling, it is fun. And the reddish egret does all sorts of crazy wing and jumping movements when it is fishing. Kind of like I do when I am fishing! LOL

Teeny that is excellent freeze action. They do make me smile, one of my favorites is watching pelicans glide in on top of the water. Thanks for posting wonderful story and observations. Oh a friend just moved into a condo on the beach in Biloxi, how nice is that across from the beech.

You mention mosquitos, do you know the entire late spring and summer we have had no mosquitos, how have they been on the coast, wow the cool front is beginning to move thru its so nice the window will be opened when I get home from the coffee shop, you should be feeling the effects soon if not already, north of the lake 60's. Mid 70's I believe tomorrow....how nice not and what a relief you can feel it in the air.

Thanks Michael. The image is a tad grainy but I only have it for sale as greeting cards and small prints. Just thought it was too funny not to post. Perhaps one day, I will paint it but then it would not be believable!

RE: Mosquitos

Normally you're right. This year we got east-coast style rain... and more rain... and it's really wet... and the mosquitos love it and are quite bitey this year. The upside is we're not worrying about water restrictions this year.

Cool Phyllis Beiser!

I live 7 miles from the beach. I often take my Subway turkey sandwich, my iPone with a good book and go to the beach. My problem is I fall a sleep reading my iPad, drop it in the sand and wake up wondering where in the hell I am and who dragged me out to beach, and if I blow real head on the sandwich can I still eat it? I have concluded that the 5 second rule does not apply to the beach!

But I am with you, I just love it!

Cheryl! Not to worry, when the big one hits, you may end up with beach front property. If you do any beach combing when it happens and find my iPad... you can have it. I probably won't need it anymore. And don't eat the sandwich!

My favorite is the snowy white egret, silly but great shot. They so beautiful when they glide in to land. Your birds reminded me of that tragic story I forgot now where but someone was under the water and the very moment they came to service a pelican impaled the swimmer how tragic. The person passed died from the sustained injury. Wasn't it Grand Isle or Florida somewhere.

The episode of the birds may well air tonight episode of ZOO 8 pm central time. CBS

Your masterful oils of birds of prey and water fowl the details are just astonishing.

Floyd, you are too funny! John, not a chance. The egrets were closer and they are much faster than me. Besides, then I would have missed this shot.

Gosh Michael, that is an awful story! I will never look at pelicans the same and when they chase my boat, I will duck! LOL

I think this is the pelican who did it. That's the one on the WANTED poster. Check out the guilty look & beady eyes.

It is such a rare occurrence with the swimmer. Over the years the population has made a substantial comeback since Hurricane Katrina. You would be in awe the pink egrets just near the mouth of the Mississippi River roosting in trees and marshes even over near Morgan City. I do believe somewhere in my thousands of images put away I have photos.

Wow, you found the article. Sad, for the pelican. Not so great for the swimmer, either, but at least she survived it.

Thank you right before I left the coffee shop, she was snorkling near the shore I thought it to be fla. The swimmer survied and the did what they could do to save the bird. It is a tragic story. Thanks for finding the article
